We wrote these songs against the backdrop of the national upheaval of 2016, and what emerged was a slightly modernized take on blues based hard rock. In songs such as Sweet Release, Devil’s Red Mistress and Redemption, we wrestle with the traditional blues themes of impotent anger, temptation, guilt, redemption within the context of self destruction. The inclusion of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition brought in the supernatural blues element, solidly soaking the album in southern gothic whiskey in paper cup. This selection was unconscious, yet perfectly clarified this album.
