The eccentric Y was founded in 1988 by former BRATS GEISHA protagonist Yenz 'Cheyenne' Leonhardt. Guitarist Oliver Steffanson had actually been a founding member of WHITE LION, an American based act that would find multi-platinum riches across the Atlantic. The remainder of Y bore equally impressive pedigrees, drummer Tony Nemisto having sharpened his skills with EUROPE and GEISHA whilst bassist Hal Patino is an erstwhile GEISHA colleague and ex-member of KING DIAMOND.
After the demise of GEISHA, Cheyenne and NeMisto had formed YENZ with guitarist Oliver Stefansson. This unit put out a 1989 demo and a video promotion for the song 'House Of Carnivores'. YENZ duly evolved into Y. The debut, self-titled album of 1991 saw the enlistment of no less than four heavyweight name producers with Mark Dearnley, Roberto Falaco, Tommy Hanson and Henrik Lund involved. Between the recording of 'Y' and the 1992 'Rawchild' album Steffanson bailed out to found FREAKS OF NATURE with his ex-WHITE LION companion vocalist MIKE TRAMP. Y plugged the gap with Swedish born Sven Boleyn prior to Steffanson making his return. Steffanson kept up his alliance with Tramp in 1997 being drafted in by the vocalist to kick start work on his solo album 'Capricorn'.
