In the words of the musicians, the film tells about the origin and development of black metal. In 1991, a small community of young musicians formed in Norway, who were united by their unwillingness to follow the path of death metal that was fashionable at that time and the desire to somehow express their protest.

Most of the community was only interested in music, but a proposal from one of the musicians to burn down several churches was received with approval by some of its members. A series of arsons began in Norway. Until a certain point, the police had no suspects. However, Varg Vikernes, one of the musicians, then gave an interview to a newspaper journalist, who, according to Varg, eventually distorted his words and denounced him to the police. Vikernes was arrested, and the Norwegian press and television were filled with articles and reports labeling all black metal musicians as "Satanists". After some time, Varg was released, but in the end he still ended up in prison for the murder of another musician, Euronymous. The media attention to the black metal scene has led to an increase in the genre's popularity. The movement, which was originally conceived as a protest against fashionable trends in music, became fashionable itself through the efforts of the press.
