The 80s were not friendly to a rock guitarist, with blues roots and who plays for pay, so Hunters appearances became more sporadic. In addition to all of this, he developed a problem with his sight that eventually would leave him almost blind. In 1988 he released his second solo album "The Deacon". The album would be his last release of the century as a solo artist. His third album was released almost 20 years later. At the time he was also part of The H Factor with Pete Haycock and Derek Holt both of Climax Blues Band. The H Factor released a self-titled album in 1989.
In the 90s Steve Hunter contributed on recordings by among others David Lee Roth (A Little Ain't Enough, Your Filthy Little Mouth), Julian Lennon (Help Yourself), Little Bob (Alive or Nothing) and Leslie West (Dodgin' The Dirt).
