Private releases can be the most basic and crucial part of Rock music in general. In a self-financed release you clearly witness the work of a band, its struggle and frenzy, the dreams and motives, the naïve yet honest approach and the big ambitions as if the world waits for them. Whatever budget big companies can offer (or once offered, to be more precise) or tour promoters can put forward, it’s the private albums that have the most possibility for an outfit to share its musical scope and the potential fans to build a first draft basis.

SKYSENT LU come from Greece and “2 Seconds Late” is their debut CD. A first reference as the auditions carry on is that the quartet has the 70s (Hard) Rock touch as the founding layer. An opening main riff, bass lines that have personality and do not just follow the riff themes, a drum pattern that leaves space for the lyrics to breathe and some warm vintage vocals that adore the past but also take a glimpse of the 90s more ‘alternative’ attempts. The songs are mostly mi-pace with a few exceptions that either look the groovy road or deliver the goods in an up-tempo mode.

I did not know if the band had this specific sound in mind while mixing the album’s sound but “2 Seconds Late” sounds 80% old-fashioned with a 20% more recent touch. The British Rock style has its share here (DEEP PURPLE, old WHITESNAKE, late IRON MAIDEN etc) with America’s post-80s Rock also spewing out (PEARL JAM or even more recent QUEENSRYCHE). I’d wish for a fatter sound and broadened rhythm section volume but if there’re budget limitations who can protest?

Truth is that the lack of tempo variety may result in you feeling kinda bored in the end but that’s more of an illusion since the album can normally run rather smoothly. The songs do not exhale some kind of essence but are quite nice overall. This, along with the ‘underground’ feeling of the CD result in a debut album you can surely live without but also spend some nice moments if you’re into obscure recordings.
