Now we have here a very interesting album: “First Shot“, the 1981 debut LP by German Hard Rock band REVOLVER in its remastered CD reissue, very hard to find now with copies being sold for over €500.

Apart from the music, their debut album is also interesting for a few peripheral reasons. First of all, it was produced by famous German Metal guru Dieter Dierks, who also was fully involved co-writing & arranging most of the songs. Secondly, it has Don Dokken doing some backing vocals on it.
Revolver was a very competent Melodic Hard Rock band, and they had an impressive vocalist in American female singer Mary B. Thompson. She lifts the songs above the average, in fact the 9 tracks here are way above average, two of them even being downright excellent.

‘I See the Light’ is a commercial sounding well written Hard Rock song. ‘Not too Late’ is a sharp midtempo with a harder chorus to be a ‘ballad’. One of the two excellent tracks on the album is the second ballad, called ‘Yesterday Dreams’. It’s the kind of thing that will be enjoyed by fans of early 80s female-fronted AOR.
And the best song of the album is ‘Contact’. It’s a midtempo classic Hard Rock tune with a very catchy chorus and with a slow ending that has a stretched out guitar solo on it. Thompson really excels on this one.
All is perfectly heard thanks to Dierks’ trademark pristine production, still hard rocking with razor guitars.

‘First Shot’ could make a fine addition to your record collection, if you’re into early 80s Hard Rock. It certainly was a promising debut.
With their custom-made, revolver-shaped guitars (take a look at the album cover) Revolver toured Japan and accompanied Ozzy Osbourne on his European tour in 1982, after which singer Thompson left the band. A further album was released under the name Raindancer in 1984 , and guitarist Dieter Roth subsequently released several solo albums. Revolver reunites from time to time to play for their devoted fans.
