The French classic rock scene is full of talent. Some are well known, others are more discreet, because of the style of music they play. In the case of RED BEANS & PEPPER SAUCE, as being independent this forced discretion is almost criminal considering their know-how. Their seven albums in more than a decade of existence showcase their experience and honed skills.

RED BEANS & PEPPER SAUCE isn’t the Red Hot Chili funk band, they inject a good dose of modernity to its heavy blues inherited from the ’70s, soulful vocals and a true retro vibe all over their music. This new album “Supernova” is a proof of that, a pretty killer mix of Hendrix, Living Colour and Led Zeppelin, all with electrifying bluesy licks and atmospheres.

In addition to unstoppable tracks at the border of heavy blues and classic rock (‘The Shadows’, ‘Hel’, the Hammond-driven ‘Show Me Your Love’), “Supernova” bets on eclecticism and yet never loses its coherence, thanks to particularly neat compositions and a groove that keeps the listener constantly alert.
The title ‘Same Old Story’ could sum up the music of Red Beans & Pepper Sauce: bluesy verses, pop choruses, a very rocking bridge and a Hammond organ which gives to the whole an immediately familiar vintage side.

“Supernova” draws its strength from its constant back and forth between past and present, drawing on influences from Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder (‘I Want To Take You Higher’), Living Colour, Zepp, and more.
Led by Laurent Galichon’s flamboyant and particularly inspired guitar playing, Red Beans & Pepper Sauce navigates between rock and psychedelia too and offers Jessyka Aké the opportunity to express all her talent. The singer goes from the power of Rock to the subtlety of soul with a disconcerting ease and shows a strong character that fits like a glove to the powerful compositions of the band.

Both wild and subtle, fiery and controlled, “Supernova” is a good, varied and entertaining heavy blues retro classic rock album. Let’s hope that it will put Red Beans & Pepper Sauce in the spotlight a bit more.
