The other day we featured the 1984, second album from ’80s Canadian band RECKLESS, a record done after they shifted in style in favor to the glam metal of the day. But in their origins, the band was pretty different. And good!

Hailing from Ontario, Canada, RECKLESS was founded in 1978 by guitarist and songwriter Steve Madden, forever prolific and very talented too. After performing shows all across Canada, in 1980 the band signed to the Hollywood based record label Harvest, part of the EMI Group. The band’s original line-up featured Steve Madden on guitar, with female Jan Melanson on vocals, Gene Stout on bass and Gil Roberts on drums.

Shortly after signing to Harvest, their debut album ‘Reckless’ was released that same year. The brilliant guitar work of Madden, and the quirky vocal delivery of Melanson created a form of catchy commercial hard rock.
However, on many songs, Madden shows his NWOBHM influences turning things pretty heavy. And he rips on the guitar – some riffs and solos are insane, hot n’ heavy! As a proof of RECKLESS edge, they opened for Iron Maiden on the Killers Tour to support this album.
Other tracks are commercial, pop-rockin’ melodic, but never cheesy, always with a stinging attack.
Here’s the Rock Candy Records remastered reissue of “Reckless” (now out of print, not listed at their website anymore) including previously unreleased tracks as bonus.
