Well, this is not a lost QUIET RIOT album – “Cold Day in Hell” is an European re-release of the band 1993’s album ‘Terrified’ done in the 2000’s due the original being out of print. It’s an official reissue, but somehow they decided to change the title, and the album cover art with a photo of the QR-classic era: Kevin DuBrow, Carlos Cavazo, Frankie Banali, and Rudy Sarzo (although the latter did not play on the record).
Not only ‘Terrified’ has became out of print, but also this 2000’s reissue, so today we see ”Cold Day in Hell (Reissue 2024)” available again – only in Europe.
This album announced the return of the mighty Mr. DuBrow on vocals and musically a return to their metal / hard rock roots, so if Metal Health & Condition Critical are your ‘real’ Quiet Riot’, “Cold Day in Hell” is a must have.
You have metal anthems in “Loaded Gun”, “Rude Boy”, the title track, and of course a usual party-tune in “Little Angel”.
When originally released some journalists criticized the album but c’mon, in 1993 the ‘new thing’ in rock was grunge / alternative music, and Quiet Riot not only brought back DuBrow, but recorded an album with a classic 1983-84 sound & feel – kudos to ’em.
Yeah, perhaps not all the songs are strong as before, but all are pretty ballsy and rock hard. There’s an acoustic, hippy-dippy cover of the classic “Itchycoo Park” (Small Faces) very well done, and a particularly good instrumental in closer “Resurrection”.
If you love classic 1983-1986 Quiet Riot, there’s no reason to not like “Cold Day in Hell”.
A welcomed reissue.
Highly Recommended
