Prins Svart is in a completely different league when it comes to rock in Swedish. Not boyishly charming like Håkan Hellström, not catchphrase-heavy Nynningen and not pretentious trollpunk either. Next I think of the recently deceased Pugh and his playful handling of his mother tongue in his own universe of verbs, consonants and pronouns. But the well-read guitarist Henrik Bergqvist is also a docent in linguistics, which may have a certain significance.
Mats Levén has an ore-toned lion's voice that makes the words swing and makes the lyrics come alive like very few singers do. In Sweden, it is probably only Thåström who has the same privilege.
Prins Svart may play hard rock of a classic style and in their music the echoes of Led Zeppelin and Rush are mainly heard. Bands that rarely could predict what the next song on the record would sound like.
Same thing here. Prins Svart surprises again on this his fifth album. A cohesive and direct collection of eight songs in around 40 minutes without any sit-ups or idle roll.
