Review:
What happens when you take three former Buckcherry members and put them together once again? In the case of Black Robot the results are rather surprising. Black Robot is the creation of Jonathan "JB" Brightman, who was one of the founding members of Buckcherry. Along with Detroit city singer Huck Johns, the pair founded Black Robot before bringing Buckcherry alumni Devon Glenn and Yogi along for the ride. This album was originally released independently in 2009, but is about to be reissued with two bonus tracks featuring a different line-up.
Of course the obvious thing to do with this band would be to be to clone the Buckcherry sound and go in that direction. That isn't exactly the vision thatBrightman and Johns had in mind for Black Robot however. Aside from the opener "Badass", their arrangement of the J.J. Cale penned and Eric Claptonclassic "Cocaine" (what is it with these guys and cocaine anyway?) and "Girls Kissing Girls" which includes some AC/DC influenced power riffage, that's where the Buckcherry similarities end. Black Robot is much more eclectic, and they step outside of the box throughout their self titled debut effort. Their sound is part garage band, part punk, part glam, part alternative and part straight forward rock 'n' roll with a 70's feel to it. The music is explosive, memorable, soulful, bursting with attitude and full of piss and vinegar. If you're looking for the next big thing in rock 'n' roll then Black Robot are it.
The only thing that would have made this album even stronger is if it had been scaled down from 13 tracks to a solid 10. The production is king, the musicianship and the songs are there in spades and the attitude is off the hook. Look for Black Robot, with their revitalized line-up of Johns, Brightman,Andy Andersson (guitar), Staffan Osterlind (guitar) and Possum Hill (drums), to explode in 2010.

This DVD package features an awesome performance by Dangerous Toys reuniting for their 20th Anniversary Concert Celebration in their home town of Austin, TX - filmed and recorded at the Red Eyed Fly on May 7, 2005. Here, the band perfectly recaptures their signature brand of hard rock with often humorous lyrics. Founded in 1987, Dangerous Toys put out four full-length albums and one live album before unofficially disbanding at the turn of the millennium. Their major label debut, the Gold-certified Dangerous Toys featured the singles "Teas N' Pleas N' " and "Scared" and both songs appear on this live recording.

So I’m going to go right out and say it: I love STAGE KIDS. Killer Tofu is the deadliest tofu I’ve ever heard! But, if this is your first time hearing about this band let me share a few words to introduce your experience.
Stage Kids are a youthful 6 piece from Mira Mesa, California - they compose music that some would categorize as ‘mathrock’ or ‘jazzy’ or ‘groovy’ or ‘bootyshakin’ - Jason D. Jesus, one of the guitarists from Stage Kids mentioned in my previous Q&A that they play ‘rock n roll with jazz/hiphop influences.’ The point is you can take whatever you want out of their music! Shake your butt!

When you are a neoclassical Metal band and name your new album “Black As Death” you really have to mean business in order to convince the listener ‘bout the band’s intentions. IRON MASK got their name from the “Man In The Iron Mask” prisoner (whose real identity was a matter of subjects in lots of books - more info here) and is the brainchild of Belgium’s guitarist Dushan Petrossi. Having so far released three albums in the 00s, this new CD sees none other than Mark Boals delivering lead vocals and it’s for sure fans of the American singer will dig this new album no questions asked. But, what about the rest?
I can hardly remember the impression I got from the band’s latest album “Shadow Of The Red Baron” (2009) but I can imagine there’s no major difference in the new album. You get well-played and well-produced neoclassical Metal that draws inspiration fromDEEP PURPLE and Yngwie Malmsteen while it features enough Euro Power elements that still do not tend to be dominant. There’s speed, there’s enough riff work blended with keyboard layers and the drums are once double-bass hammering while creating a darker atmosphere in slower parts. As for the solos: you just can imagine from what’s previously stated.
To the band’s benefit, the album title applies to the musical atmosphere since there’s a dark vibe spread in 62 minutes of music (a little too much - you may get bored) and the songs themselves do not show any tendency for happiness or at least high-energy music-making. I like Petrossi’s procedure in the main harmonies he builds in the songs: he can carry you to other places and times and, true to be said, the vocal experience of Mark Boals helps a lot to this direction since the multi-credited singer not only offers his untamed vocal range in ease but he also works a lot on vibrato singing in the crawling tempo song-parts, contributing to the total essence flourishing.
Not to neglect what’s already been said, bear in mind “Black As Death” includes songs that are long enough in duration and not forgetting how single-dimensional neoclassical Metal can beat times there’s a strong possibility you won’t fully enjoy what you’ll pay for. So, try before you buy but rest assured the instrumentation, sound and vocals are in a grand level.
