Fronted by Hugo Valenti, one of the finest voices in rock with a career spanning three decades, back in 1990 his band Valentine self-tiled LP still ranks among the best AOR & Melodic Rock albums of the time. For the second record Hugo and the guys were looking for more expansive textures and song elaboration, so decided to completely change the band’s name to OPEN SKYZ.
“Open Skyz“, their self-titled 1993 overlooked debut and only album is now being reissued by Music On CD.
Produced by Richie Zito with his usual crisp treatment, “Open Skyz” blends elements of rock&pop, progressive rock, and melodic rock, featuring a mix of intricate guitar work, melodic vocals, harmonies, and dynamic compositions.
The album features incredible arrangements and layered instrumentation typical of progressive rock, but also includes hard rock riffs and melodic hooks. The band mixes acoustic guitar, synthesizers, and electric guitar to create atmospheric, yet energetic songs. Stand out tracks on the album include “Across the Open Sky” and “The Endless Journey”.
Speaking of Journey (the band), fans will love “Nothing Without You” and “Golden Years”, both deliciously good AOR tunes. Many mentioned Hugo as the natural successor of Steve Perry due their similar tenor vocals.
A very welcomed Music On CD reissue.
HIGHLY Recommended
