Montrose – The Alternate Montrose (1973)
Why is the info with this post completely unrelated to this particular album? Here’s what info i found out : In 2009 the specialist Hard Rock reissue label Rock Candy Records issued a ‘Remastered & Reloaded’ version of the classic Montrose debut album on CD which went back to the original master tapes to produce ‘the definitive edition of the album’.
Originally slated to include bonus material from the album sessions, prohibitive licensing costs eventually put the kibosh on the idea of an expanded edition.
Later this remastered bonus material was leaked & began doing the rounds on the internet as a bootleg album entitled ‘The Alternate Montrose’.
The eleven song ‘album’ features a wealth of fascinating material culled from the 1973 album sessions including alternate takes of the now classic songs, rough alternate mixes, alternate vocal & guitar parts and undubbed & unedited versions of the tracks.
Many songs are played in a completely different fashion; sped up, stretched out & generally experimented with, and it’s a joy to hear the musicians pulling the album into it’s final form.
It’s easy to see how this material would have made a perfect bonus disc to go with the ‘Montrose’ reissue, and it offers a fascinating insight into the creative process involved in crafting the classic album and all with utterly pristine sound throughout.
