With the recent Stone Fury posts one of you asked for other bands with a similar Zeppelin-esque bluesy hard rock sound similar to Lenny Wolf / Kingdom Come, Zebra, etc, and here’s this Canadian band MINDSTORM you need to check out.
Mindstorm was centered around Manitoba natives singer / songwriter Travis Mitchell and guitarist Al Rodgers. They moved to Winnipeg in the mid ’80s and with Russ Boswell on bass and drummer Bruce Moffet (both having just left the Corey Hart Band), they started touring the Ontario rock circuit and throughout the West for the next couple of years.
The band got a record contract, and their 1987 debut album “Mindstorm” was produced by former April Wine guitarist Gary Moffet (who also play keyboards on the LP). Mitchell wrote all the material, bluesy hard rock with a Seventies inspiration but an ’80s sound & feeling.
This is the Unidisc Records reissue which sounds better than the original CD pressing.
The record got enough airplay throughout Canada it warranted a cross-country tour. Compared to everyone from Led Zeppelin and Whitesnake to King Kobra and Zebra, the album also did well in the UK with distribution via Barricade Records.
From the lead-off “See The Future” – which made it to the compilation INDIE-CAN ’88, to “Go My Way” and “Witch Doctor,” Mindstorm keeps the classic rock flame alive, timeless rocking songs with atmospheres. Mitchell’s vocals are very similar to Robert Plant and Lenny Wolf, with the same dramatic intonations and a pretty amazing depth of singing.
Highly Recommended
