S&M is the ninth album by the metal band Metallica, recorded in 1999. The album is a recording of the band's live performance with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The name "S&M" means "Symphony and Metallica", but some fans of the group believe that the name of the album is associated with the song of the same name (S&M - Sado & Mazo) by the group Thin Lizzy, whose work greatly influenced the group. The band played songs from all albums from Ride the Lightning to ReLoad, as well as two new songs - "Human" and "No Leaf Clover" and the song "The Ecstasy of Gold" - a cover version of Ennio Morricone.
Composer Michael Kamen was the conductor and also wrote the parts for the symphonic instruments.
During the concert, James Hetfield named the song "Of Wolf and Man" "Of Wolfgang and Man", which refers to Wolfgang Mozart.
