Here’s the long awaited release of recordings by the late, great Johnny Logan Vines, the original singer of Lillian Axe. Originally published by himself in 1992 with the title ‘One Step Closer’ as a 6-track EP, this FnA Records remastered reissue includes 10 extra songs as bonus tracks, re-titled “One Step Forward… Two Steps Back” and featuring new artwork.
Johnny formed LOGAN in the summer of 1991 with drummer Mark Kelley, guitarist Don LaFon and bassist John Jay in Houston, Texas. They immediately began writing songs and playing shows in the Houston area.
Later that summer Logan recorded a demo that gained the attention of multiplatinum producer/engineer Geoff Workman. In January/February of 1992 Logan recorded ‘One Step Closer’, a 6 song EP with Geoff Workman working his magic.
In 1992 Logan traveled to the East Coast to do a showcase tour. In the winter of ’92/’93 bassist John Jay left the band and was replaced by Kelly D. Smith. In the summer of 1993 came another trip to the East Coast.
During its existence Logan opened for such acts as Quiet Riot, Jackyl, Kix, Widowmaker, .38 Special, Zebra, and more. The band performed together until 1994.
On July 24, 2010 the original lineup of Logan performed a reunion show in Houston, Texas. This was the first time the original line up had performed together since 1993.
The first six tracks are the remastered versions of the songs that appeared on the ‘One Step Closer’ EP. In addition, the remaining band has graciously provided all the remaining material that was recorded, which consists of 10 never-before-released tracks. Included in these tracks is a cover of the Hollies song “Long Cool Woman”.
The 10 new tracks not only compliment, but rival the six songs on the ‘One Step Closer’ EP: American Hard Rock with that early ’90s sound & style. Sound quality is pretty good overall.
These are a true gems to hard rock fans & collectors who may remember the band and always wanted more, as well as Lillian Axe fans.
