• Mention Giacomo Puccini's name and opera-lovers all over the world will think of grand opera and passionate love stories. One of the world's most famous arias comes from the composer's final opera, Turandot: "Nessun dorma" - none shall sleep because by morning the Chinese princess is determined to have discovered the name of the unknown prince. The work is remarkable for ist Chinese local colour, ist opulent crowd scenes, ist powerful choruses and ist characters overwhelmed by their emotions. Enthusiastically acclaimed by ist audiences, the present production combines spectacular and touching scenes on the Bregenz Festival's vast lakeside stage.
• Noch sind die Bregenzer Festspiele nicht zu Ende gegangen, und schon liegt der Mitschnitt der diesjahrigen Bregenzer Opernnovitat "Turandot" vor. Von der Arie, die die Massen begeistert ("Nessun Dorma") bis hin zur schaurig-schonen Handlung rund um die erst blutrunstige, dann lieblich inbrunstige Prinzessin und ihren todesmutigen Verehrer: "Turandot" bietet zweifellos alles, was eine dramatische Oper braucht. Und in der wieder einmal spektakularen Kulisse der Bregenzer Seebuhne, auf der mit modernsten Mitteln und hochstem technischen Aufwand eine riesige "Chinesische Mauer" in Form eines Drachen entstand, wirkt alles so opulent und pompos wie noch nie. Die Presse ist seit der Premiere in Bregenz dauerbegeistert - ...von Allem: Von den Sangern, der Regie, dem Buhnenbild, dem Orchester, der Atmosphare. Es ist ja auch kein Wunder: Oper wird in Bregenz wieder zum Spektakel fur die Massen, dass die realen, uberwaltigenden Schauwerte dieser Kunstform betont. Und - seien wir ehrlich - das kommt der barocken Vorstellung der musikgeschichtlich ersten Opern auch weit naher als manch nuchterne Inszenierung der grassierenden Postmoderne.
