FM, the iconic British AOR band formed in 1984, has been a household name for decades. With their unique sound and captivating lyrics, they have captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.
Released by themselves and only sold at gigs and the band’s official website (not available anymore) ”Vintage & Rare Volume I” is a double CD comprising of 34 tracks, some of their best songs alongside many rare remixes, edits, Japanese bonus tracks, and unreleased, collective stuff.
This is the re-release done by themselves, with different artwork and with all the music remastered at Abbey Road Studios, London, by Geoff Pefche.
This is a must-have for any die-hard FM and AOR fan. Remastered and repackaged by their own label Naughty Records, it’s the perfect beginners’ guide to all things FM. From the powerful vocals of Steve Overland to the skillful guitar riffs of Chris Overland, this album covers all bases and showcases the band’s versatility.
And the unreleased tunes are really good.
The album kicks off with the classic anthems like “Breathe Fire” and “Only The Strong Survive,” setting the tone for what’s to come. Both from the bands more Melodic Hard Rock oriented period 91-92. Eighties songs like “Frozen Heart (edit)” and “That Girl” will transport you back in time when the band was on fire, and you can’t help but sing along to the infectious chorus of “That Girl.” The inclusion of their cover of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” adds a cool twist to this collection.
Disc 2 of this album is a treasure trove of FM’s best work. It includes tunes like the previously unreleased extended version of the single “Bad Luck” and the b-side “Hurt Is Where The Heart Is”, and the ’93 mix of “Don’t Stop”, taken from the compilation Closer To Heaven.
These songs showcase the band’s signature sound, with infectious hooks and soaring vocals from Steve.
“Vintage And Rare” is a fantastic compilation that covers the best of FM’s impressive career. It’s the perfect introduction to the band for new listeners, and a nostalgic trip down memory lane for longtime fans & collectors.
