Defiance belonged to the San Francisco Bay Area thrash scene that gave us luminaries such as Testament, Exodus, Forbidden and Death Angel. Despite releasing three competent thrash albums between 1989 and 1992 on Roadrunner Records, the band never really achieved much popularity or sales wise, disbanding in 1993.
Void Terra Firma, their second album, is commonly regarded as their best by thrash pundits, and while competent enough despite it's annoying over abrasive and saturated guitar tone, it doesn't offer enough original elements that could make the band stand out from the hundreds of bands treading the same musical waters at the time.
The reissue edition offers seven bonus tracks, four demos and three live songs, which would make it an ideal purchase for serious 80s thrash metal fans.
Useless Metal Trivia Note # 1: Vocalist Steve Esquivel, who sings on this record, would later resurface on late 90s groove metallers Skinlab, who ironically, would suffer the same fate as Defiance.
Useless Metal Trivia Note # 2: Hot on the heels of the mid to late 00s retro thrash craze, Steve Esquivel and the band reformed, releasing an album on 2009 (The Prophecy) through Candlelight Records.
