Among great female vocalists throughout the ages and musical genres such as Classic Rock’s Pat Benatar, Metalcore’s Maria Brink from IN THIS MOMENT and Power Metal’s Brittney Hayes from UNLEASH THE ARCHERS, joins a new amazing voice.
Rene Van Den Berg of CRIMSON CHRYSALIS is the newest addition to Ravenheart Music and has the kind of voice that can move you to tears in from the very beginning of the album with “Angels & Demons”. Her voice lifts you like a gentle wind and carries you to another plane of music existence that I barely even knew existed! Mind you, not all of the songs on “Crimson Passion Cry” are as soft and tear jerking as the title track “Crimson Passion Cry”, such as “F Off and Die”. Yet, her voice still manages to reach deep inside of you and make it almost impossible to focus on anything else.
Alongside one of the powerful, yet tender voices in a long line of amazing female vocalists, is the most haunting awe-inspiring music that I have heard in a long time. It is neither behind nor in front of her vocals. They seem to blend perfectly, as if making love rather than Rene or the music dominating each other. My only concern, at first, was the way they used tribal music in “Blood Diamond” but they pulled off something I usually find no other band truly does correct!
You could try and compare this South African blessing to Symphonic Metal scene veterans such as NIGHTWISH and EPICA; you could try to compare Van Den Berg to Tarja Turunen or Simone Simmons; but in my personal opinion there is no comparison. With this “Crimson Passion” we are given the chance to see how inspiring, heartbreaking, and uplifting Symphonic Rock / Metal can be with the right people behind the magic. I truly think that any fan of any genre of music could truly enjoy this album.
