As requested here’s the only album recorded by super-group CONTRABAND, a side project including members of famous hard rock bands from the 80s, such as Shark Island, McAuley Schenker Group, Ratt, L.A. Guns, and Vixen.
The line-up consisted of Michael Schenker (McAuley Schenker Group) on guitars & backing vocals, Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns) on guitars & backing vocals, Share Pedersen (Vixen) on bass & backing vocals, drummer Bobby Blotzer (Ratt), and Richard Black (Shark Island) on lead vocals.
CONTRABAND was formed after a Vixen and Ratt unplugged session on MTV in 1990. The management contacted Tracii Guns and Black, and then Michael Schenker, who at the time was member of Ratt. Yeah, Schenker was briefly the guitarist of Ratt, temporarily replacing Robbin Crosby.
CONTRABAND was a music industry project – but a good one – one of the tracks from this self-titled album was used for the movie ‘If Looks Could Kill’ soundtrack. The track list consists mostly of songs penned by outside songwriters – and really quality songwriters; Mark Spiro, Dann Huff, Michael Thompson, Tim Feehan, Ian Hunter, Gregg Fulkerson, and more.
Add to that renowned Kevin Beamish producing (REO Speedwagon, Jefferson Starship, Y&T) and we have here a cool, rockin’ album.
Corporate hard rock? A fabricated rouse by a self-absorbed manager? Who cares, “Contraband” is a fun album, very well arranged, performed & produced with that clean early ’90s US melodic hard rock sound.
