Formerly known as Big Heat, Stygmata and Stygmata IV. Power Metal, the best heavy band in Austria. Melodically unconventional and slightly gloomy Heavy. Music sounds at ease and virtuosity, without any apparent effort on the part of musicians. The keys are used only where necessary to create a gothic sound effects, the same goes for guitars and other instruments. Simultaneous play all the musicians often gives rise to unusual combinations of sound in the original arrangements. A 'INRI' and 'Gethsemane' from the famous rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar sound to truly mature and tragic and are able to delight the most demanding audiophile. The epic song 'Fool IY' is a mixture of original apocalyptic visions with the motives of early Black Sabbath. 'Pain' captivates his audience enlightened, and at the same time anxious sadness. Tribute to traditional Heavy musicians give to the cover versions of Iron Maiden '22 Acacia avenue ', is almost indistinguishable from the original.

Tribute to Iron Maiden – The Soldier Has Returned (2011)
Mar 24, 2012 20:04
Hard Rock Heavy Metal |Power Metal
For the most dedicated of us Iron Maiden fans, it can be quite a challenge tracking down every tribute album of new material by aspiring artists or established and popular acts who just want to pay tribute to the band that inspired them to success. Always spoiling things for us is Paul Di'Anno and his has-been/never-was cohorts who put out the same material over and over again in a repackaged format. The Soldier has Returned is just a repackaging of the Dead Line label's release "666: The Number one Beast, Vol. 1." Nothing new here at all. Worse, it's nothing worth listening to, either. Di'Anno covers his own tracks which give nothing new or different to make them worth a listen. In fact, every track on this release sounds like the same thing you'd expect to hear from a cover band--musicians doing the best they can to faithfully reproduce the original sound. How boring is that? The Dickinson era songs are sung by several other B-listers like Steve Overland, Steve Grimmet and Doogie White, and they offer the only variations to the overall sound. Overland is comically bad, but Grimmet and White do a decent job. Still, I recommend you save your money and buy a $2 used copy of the original release. Heck, for about the same price as this one, or even less, you can probably pick up the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 package of the original "666: The Number One Beast together."
1. Steve Overland (FM) - Can I Play With Madness
2. Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper) - 2 Minutes To Midnight
3. Paul Dianno (Killers) - Wrathchild
4. Doogie White (Rainbow) - Hallowed Be Thy Name
5. Paul Dianno (Killers) - Running Free
6. Doogie White (Rainbow) - The Evil That Men Do
7. Paul Dianno (Killers) - Phantom Of The Opera
8. Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper) - Number Of The Beast
9. Paul Dianno (Killers) - Iron Maiden
10. Steve Overland (FM) - Run To The Hills
11. Gary Barden (MSG) - The Trooper
If Solar Fragment would have their way they would single-handedly resurrect the power metal genre to its lost heights of glory. Heir apparents to the legends, Blind Guardian and Hammerfall, Solar Fragment delivers classic melodic heavy power metal on their second effort In Our Hands.
Not wanting to use words like 'conventional' or 'typical' but, nevertheless, the tunes on In Our Hands are derivative of the genre. The oft charging pace of openers In Our Hands, With Empty Eyes, and Inside the Circle are convincing pieces of the style. Yet, Solar Fragment can integrate some subtle changes adding some lightness from acoustic guitar on Race the Seas and Come Hell or High Water. But both songs quickly move into the bombastic. Well, of course. These songs tip the balance to the best content that comes in the second half of In Our Hands. Moana's Return and The March of the Golems are well-developed songs that exploit all the vital elements proving that Solar Fragment are quickly becoming masters of the genre. (As a side note: Solar Fragment gets some serious cred as the famous Hansi Kursch guests on the album.)
Indeed, Solar Fragment's In Our Hands is classic power metal in that great melodic heavy metal tradition, and done quite well. Long suffering fans of the genre should take note, your new heroes have arrived to revive this much maligned style. Recommended.

3 Inches Of Blood – Long Live Heavy Metal (2012)
Mar 23, 2012 14:19
Heavy Metal |Power Metal
Canadian heavy metal warriors 3 Inches Of Blood have given me some great memories over the past couple of years. I’ve seen them perform in all kinds of settings, as a headliner at Anaheim’s tiny Chain Reaction club, as opening act on the second stage at Mayhem Festival, and at a mid-sized club venue as main support to Eluveitie. Besides their high-octane live performances at these shows, I’ve enjoyed the four studio albums they’ve released over the course of their decade-long career, and the announcement of a new 3IOB album was very exciting for me. As soon as I was allowed the chance to listen to it, a sense of nervous anticipation took over me.
