Norwegian Melodic Metal...Now

One thing I don't get is why you put 23 minutes of silence at the end of the eleven songs, only exception is at the very end where a guy turns up to say: "and stop" in Norwegian, a complete waste of time! But the 51 minutes that precede that are a very positive surprise...

While their first album should have clear 70s references this one has strong references to Scandinavian power metal with fine twists and turns into various other territories. Teodor Tuff sounds fresh and unspoiled, even though Sonata Arctica comes to mind more than once, and their songs are well written and performed. The powerful production fits the music very well, to no surprise, since the album has been mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen.

Open Your Mind is the bands first commercial release and the 10 track album is a melodically furious fusion of massive metal riff s and catchy as hell vocal s that is all held together beautifully by a tight as a vice groove driven rhythm section that make all the plaudits this band have received for their live show all the more justified. The first single to be taken from the album One More Road From Home proceeds the album on Monday October 25th and is a hugely anthemic slice of metal tinged alternative rock will appeal to fans of bands such as Stone Sour, Shinedown and Alter Bridge.

One clue to Brent Enman's musical heritage and style is revealed on one signature song, 'Man of the Past,' from his debut disc Wildman. 'Please get me outta here, to 1969, that's when I want to be alive,' Enman croons, 'then I'd be feeling fine.' Enman's interest is in classic rock, maybe not quite as far back as '69, but definitely mid-Seventies to early Eighties.

Enman is a musical prodigy, talented multi-instrumentalist who performed every instrument, and all vocals, on Wildman. It's the culmination of a life long dream, and he certainly captures the classic rock sound. However, 'Wildman' may be a misnomer for him and this album.

Formed amidst the Steelworks town of Corby, Northamptonshire, their very own first chapter was born: ‘Chapter One’ and set the scene for Viking Skull. Top notch reviews were abundant and a landmark 11/10 review from Metal Hammer lead the band to secure a busy touring schedule supporting the likes of Alice Cooper, HIM, Clutch and Dio! 2005 saw Viking Skull release ‘Born in Hell’  but we believe a bottle or two of Absinthe is to blame for what then became a two year break… isn’t it always!

Now...From Germany

No doubt POINTERS HEAD belongs to the live bands, they not only open a barrel, they shut it again! And they do this with an intensity that all immediately makes it clear in which direction it goes: next! After ten years finding, patience, development and hard work, place 2 in the category ' hard'n'heavy of the "German Rock & Pop Award can 2006" and successfully seasoned European Tour 2008 with L. A. Guns, POINTERSHEAD enters now, perfectly positioned, the entire world with the concept album "Worst Case SOCIETY" into the socially battered face. With a remarkably rich sound, distinctive 80he influences and a brimful scoop of pressure, recruited POINTERS HEAD evening for evening tirelessly supporters of the head army. It shall be closed to focus these days on a world, which overruns us again and again with pursuing crosses. POINTERSHEAD takes degree and hits the bullseye. And the head army moves with "Worst Case Society" through the countries and mobilised to cogiatation and dissenting.

The last Steve Cichon album I heard was 2010's "Cranial Feedback", a release that was full of skill and technique, but ultimately not that exciting. New one "Heavy Sleeper" is a similar beast, though fortunately the adrenaline levels are pumped up several notches making it a lot more then mere background music.

The sound is still a combination of jazz, prog metal, hard rock and occasional electronica, but a lot more effort has been put into the variety and the spunkiness of the rhythms this time. Gone are the stupid live crowd effects, gone are the very fake drums, being replaced by fake but considerably better percussion sounds. The result is enthusiastic, interesting and a lot more energetic than the guy on the artwork.

BLACK WIDOW, the ground breaking, occult, orgiastic progressive hard rock group who were banned by the BBC and besieged by religious nutters when they originally emerged in 1970, return to the Sabbat in 2011 with a brand new studio album, Sleeping With Demons, released on October 31st, distributed by Cargo Records.

4 Sleaze Now...

After working in the music- and entertainment business all their lives, Steven, Kim, Johnny and Joe Sleaze decided that it was time to fully commit to the sleazy, glammy, punky rock n' roll that they had grown up with and that they love. With influences such as Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, AC/DC, Kiss and the Ramones as well as Green Day, Foo Fighters and the Backyard Babies the band focuses on energetic live performances and strong, hooky choruses. On their very first gig they supported Hardcore Superstar and their third gig was at the Sweden Rock Festival! Sleazy Joe released the debut EP "Rock Star" in 2007, and now the fullength live CD/DVD "Close Enough For Rock N' Roll... LIVE!" is finally here

Now...

Here's another first for April, Juggernaut is my first experience with Texas metal band All Too Human. It appears that this album has been sometime in the making. We last heard from the band in 2002. The core members remain: Clint Wilson (g), Maurice Taylor (b), and Chris Lucci (d). They've borrowed Gordon Tittsworth from Images of Eden on vocals. (Lucci also plays drums for Images of Eden.)

With one spin I'll admit I was skeptical. Juggernaut is a rather diverse and dark album. To the former, you'll hear a variety of influences informing the prog, including traditional heavy metal, power metal, and modern hard rock. As to the latter, the heaviness unleashed here gives the album a weighty brooding quality. The best pieces are the bookends of the title track and the revamped instrumental Arrythmia, from 2002's Entropy.

Now !From Sweden...

This is blues rock guitarist Sannetorp’s third album. Mats is a really good blues rocker with songs in the vein of Bo Wilson, Gary Moore (the blues era), at times with a southern touch. Sannatorp is a Les Paul guy, so no Hendrix comparisons here. The music is quite classic blues rock with dark and quite depressive lyrics, half in English, half in Swedish. If his guitar playing is quite flawless, the vocals are unfortunately not. The voice is decent, but the English pronunciation makes me cringe, I’m afraid. Even though most blues players have a hard time letting anybody else interpret their lyrics, Mats would really benefit in doing so. It’s actually way better when he sings in Swedish, even though it’s all quite straight ahead with no real bluesy feeling in the vocals. As I said, the guitar playing is way more
