BLOOD SKY is an Australian melodic power-metal side project of TALIESIN guitarist, Richard Moseley featuring Micheal Mills (TOEHIDER / AYREON) on lead vocals. Originally just intended as a one-off song, ‘The Blade of Nicchi’ was released in 2024. Richard asked Mike if he would be interested in doing a full album, which Mike kindly agreed and ”MMXXV” is the result.
Aussie metal, when done right, has a knack for blending razor-sharp precision with a distinctly Oz flair, and this Blood Sky full-length debut is a prime example of the scene’s vitality. Spearheaded by Moseley skilled instrumentation Mills diverse vocals, they deliver an album here that’s equal parts muscle and finesse, with enough progressive flourishes to keep things interesting still keeping metal.
The good thing about BLOOD SKY is that they make power-metal entertaining. ”MMXXV” could have easily fallen into the trap of overblown clichés, but what makes it absolutely thrive is the chemistry between Moseley and Mills. It’s heavy, melodic, and genuinely fun and most definitely a record that will appeal to fans of Helloween, Stratovarius, and Balance Of Power without ever feeling derivative.
BLOOD SKY has doubled down and delivered a melodic power metal album with heart, skill & authenticity that is 100% their own.
From the opening number “Born in the Exchange” it’s clear these two musicians understand the genre’s DNA showcasing meaty riffs, galloping rhythms, and a melodic sensibility that keeps listeners dialled in.
Mills’ vocals are outstanding throughout, navigating rapid fire power metal runs and soaring choruses with a natural ease, elevating every track. Moseley’s instrumentation provides the perfect backbone, blending the traditional style riffing of the genre but with subtle prog flourishes that give the songs extra depth.
“Poisoned Well” and “Abandon” balance aggression with melody, while “The Collector” and “Colours Were Lies” showcase clever songwriting that doesn’t feel forced or overblown. The closer, “Sound the Alarm”, is an epic finale, hitting all the hallmarks of classic Nineties power metal with enough modern edge to feel fresh.
The cool thing of BLOOD SKY is they are a power metal project but doesn’t exactly sounds like current power metal, repetitive and in most cases, boring.
Moseley has said that ”MMXXV” is the power metal album he wanted to hear, but his prog influences are never far from the surface. Likewise, Mills’ vocals steer clear of the cookie-cutter screeching that defines some corners of the genre, opting instead for a nuanced, commanding approach that’s far more rewarding.
”MMXXV” is a triumph—a vibrant, impeccably crafted record that demands your attention. Blood Sky have arrived, and, hopefully, they’re here to stay.
