On their debut album ”This Might Get Loud” German hard rockers BLACKYARD RIOT brings a heavy dose of Aussie rock (AC/DC, Airbourne) to their sound, and when it’s well done, that’s a good thing.
Dersim Tugal wails on both lead guitar and vocals, while Nico Keener drives on rhythm guitar, the rhythm section of Patrik Apel on bass and Lars Lunova on drums are tight and a solid driving force holding down the bottom end and doing a damn good job. All four members sing backing vocals, adding depth to their vocal presence that is lacking in other bands.
Opener Rollin’ Thunder makes justice to its title. Right from the start, the guitars unleash powerful riffs. The rhythm section is energetic and sweeps everything along with it. This track, which takes us back to the 80s, is a delight of frenetic rock. Def Leppard (High ‘n Dry era) and AC/DC (Bon Scott era) aren’t far off…
All Known Man continues the party with groove and fun. The chorus is excellent, and Dersim’s solo is superb. The crystalline sound of his Gibson is reminiscent of a certain Angus… The bass/drums section is formidably effective. It’s good stuff!
