Renowned guitar player BERNIE TORMÉ (ex-Gillan, Ozzy Osbourne) posthumous album aptly named ”Final Fling” has just been released. It was recorded in December 2018 at the Barnroom Studios in Kent, England. Bernie passed away a three months after on March 17, 2019, after being hospitalized with virulent double pneumonia.
”Final Fling” was recorded by Bernie and his final trio line up (featuring bass player Sy Morton and drummer Mik Gaffney) live at Bernie’s Barnroom studio after the end of Tormé’s sadly prophetic The Final Fling tour in 2018.
The run was a huge success, and with the band in dazzling form night after night, the trio soon began to regret the decision not to record any of the shows, so with the set fresh in their minds, the band loaded the gear into the live room and set up one more time to run through a set of classics numbers, spanning Tormé’s storied career.
The energy and power is evident from the first crack of Mik’s snare drum as Tormé and company power through this classic hard rock set, which includes versions of Ozzy’s ‘Mr. Crowley’ and ‘Crazy Train’.
Bernie Tormé was for sure a guitar legend having played all over his career from blues rock to psychedelic Shredmeister to glam rock. Known for saving the day for Ozzy Osbourne in the aftermath of Randy Rhoad’s tragic death, Bernie did world tours and achieved international fame as Ian Gillan’s axe-man
Forming Desperado with Dee Snider and ex- Maiden drummer Clive Burr, Torme also fronted his own bands Electric Gypsies and ‘Tormé’ (with Phil Lewis of L.A. Guns / Girl).
”Final Fling” was sadly prophetic, but the fact that we have this release to enjoy is a joy for those who loved his individual style of play. Hearing Bernie solo and his gyrations with the guitar as well as all those noises and squeaks that became his trademark sound sure brings back memories…
With his son Eric Tormey mixing and mastering the release, it’s a fitting tribute to a truly underrated guitarist / musician.
