In Norwich, UK, there's a young band that is making some noise in the British hard rock scene, regarded by the press and a growing fan base as one of most brilliant classic rock promises.
The four piece THE BURNING CROWS are here to deliver us their debut EP "Never Had It So Good".
"Never Had It So Good" is full of British based classy Rock 'N' Roll, with hints of The Quireboys, eighties UFO and Little Angels. Recorded at the world-famous Rockfield Studios in Wales, the band have secured the expert hands of Nick Brine (The Darkness, Bruce Springsteen, Oasis) to produce and mix.
And with a guest appearance by Keith Weir (The Quireboys, Def Leppard) on keyboards, it seems that some of Rock's biggest names are starting to join the ever growing queue to get behind the band.
Opener "Slow Up Get Down" blasts mercilessly into action, while the penetrating opening chords seemingly pay homage to Aerosmith's 'Walk This Way' in a hard rockin' manner. It's full of gusto, bravado and high tempo energy that will get your foot tapping and head nodding within a minute, with a good chorus, scorching riffs and a break in pace mid-song.
Track two 'You, Me, Tonight' introduces the much loved cowbell to proceedings and is a foot stomping romp with a dynamic riff work that not only gives us some Quireboys / Stones style 'whooing' but also shows us that they aren't a million miles away from a good time Poison track - just done whole heartedly British.
Third track "Time" slows it down and here the Quireboys vibe really kicks in - no surprise that Quireboy Keith Weir guests to play keyboards on this track. You can really imagine Spike and Co. singing this so I'm guessing that can only be a compliment to their songwriting abilities. One of my favourite songs on the EP.
The next one, titled "Going Down" rocks with contagious swagger. Once again, this solidly crafted and hook-laden affair reveals Whippz' voice to be an aptly suited weapon.
Closing track "Best Damn Everything" is the most furious of the lot, as they go a bit more straight ahead hard rock the likes of which UFO or Bad Company might produce, and has everything you want in this type of band with each member stepping up to lay down some great sounds.
There are a lot of bands out there at the moment that are doing this type of rock, but The Burning Crows are above the bar in my opinion.
"Never Had It So Good" has enough fire and heart to convince the most demanding classic rock / hard rock fan delivering five hot to trot rockers full of energy. Production is excellent for this kind of genre, brilliant and organic.
These guys are like a new-age Little Angels and Skin and then some, with a promising future.
Recommended.

Loaded with 12 tracks of brain-blasting power metal, "Channelling The Infinite" features killer production and powerful, hook-laden music that will appeal to any aficionado. Each song is carefully crafted specifically to suit the singer involved, and designed to best complement their range and style. From there, the vocalists have complete freedom to write the lyrics and melodies, providing a unique insight into what truly inspires these artists. It is also available as a limited-edition digipak that includes bonus tracks for each territory.
In addition to the spectacular vocals, face-melting lead breaks and riffs that could take on a nuclear arsenal. EMPIRES OF EDEN once again showcases the incredible cover art by Los Angeles-based artist Alex Ruiz.
Commented Marshall: "I am overwhelmed by the power and emotion of the vocal performances that these amazing singers have brought to the album. It's pushed my playing to levels I never thought possible and has created the most well-rounded release I have ever been involved with. Writing for these incredible artists is a dream come true and the finished product has actually exceeded my expectations. Every song is filled with a passion and spirit that immediately grabs the listener; I am very excited for people to hear this album."
Second installment of this Finnish group whose members have already spent a result, including the singer Markku Kuikka which has a long career behind him and that could be heard alongside Lars Eric Mattsson and keyboardist of Thunderstone, Jukka Karinen, here who can speak much more broadly and with finesse.
The first effort, titled "Dialog", two years ago, revealed a group consisting of competent musicians but had trouble getting out relatively traditional influences of progressive metal, led by Symphony X and Dream Theater. "Dialog" enjoyed a good recording, arrangements, balanced between guitar and keyboards, with good melodies but also a lot of rhythm changes and parts of double pedal just agreed on these pieces of average length but a long series epic.
"Ouroboros" is a concept album based on the story of a romantic relationship ... Its beginning, its development, degradation and end. References sometimes a little too visible "Dialog" are less clear here. The band announced the album as a bit more direct, but listening to songs, or rather the songs are more focused on vocal melodies and rhythms that are simpler, the battery a little less emphasized and more nuanced. The album is also less cumbersome overall. The vocal melodies, always at the center of the compositions are often quite strong, even on two beautiful ballads. Classical piano is quite far (with a very beautiful sound, for that matter) and synth orchestrations are well developed, which does not prevent Sami Saarinen to issue sharp guitar parts well, beautiful harmonies and a few very fluid solos alongside keyboardist whose playing solo is also very swift.
Yet the first three songs are always pretty fast and powerful arrangements of keyboards in spite of very audible. Rolf Pilve we Assen still some parts of double bass, syncopated rhythms and a little chopped classic but overall, the rhythm section has changed significantly and in the right direction compared to "Dialog". The result is much more interesting especially with the ballad "Like a Dream" followed by a title in the solo piano ("Confidence and Trust")! Markku Kuikka always uses her voice rough, serious, powerful and very well placed. Strange to want to keep the stamp frayed and sometimes roaring style as well mean a few lines of clean vocals here and there, as on "Like a dream", proof that he has other strings to his bow. But this time he is accompanied by Anna Murphy (singer of Eluveitie), four songs performed as a duo. Clear voice and yet powerful of the latter is very welcome, offering a bit more diversity to the album.
The highlight of this album is probably the ballad "Flowers Die" and along "Sail Away" which form a whole with covers of themes from the first in the second ... The melancholic atmosphere, or dark and dramatic does not prevent melodies to be very accessible.Nice idea to offer some tricky piano and slow ramp-ups ... Status Minor should quickly get rid of the label Mismatched group of "power metal". It is however unfortunate that the vocals are particularly rough on the tightest passages of this dark story (on "Stain" for example), in detail that will put off some ...

Mitch Laddie is a 21-year old singer/guitarist/songwriter from the North East of England. On Burning Bridges, he is backed by Rhian Wilkinson on bass and Lee Clifford on drums and percussion. The album contains eleven tracks, all written by Mitch Laddie.
The cover notes to the album are written by Walter Trout, who warmly expresses his admiration of Mitch Laddie’s talent including the following tributes: “I first met Mitch Laddie when he was a young lad of sixteen years. I heard him play his guitar and was knocked out by the authority, command and finesse he displayed. It was beyond his years – he sounded like somebody who’d been at it for forty years! Trout goes on to praise Laddie’s considerable development and declares, “He possesses a potent, god-given gift. I believe that Mitch represents the finest of the new generation of guitar slingers/performers!”
The album demonstrates Mitch Laddie’s command of a range of guitar styles, starting with the steady rocking “Time Is Running Away”, complete with an overriding catchy guitar riff, and “Paper In Your Pocket”, which exudes a distinctively Hoax feel with a driving bass line and a blistering guitar solo. “Take A Bite” and “Would You?” deliver Sting-like vocals, while the latter and “What Are You Living For?” provide a lighter, funky-edged ambience, expertly underpinned by the impressively tight rhythm section.
“Changing Tides And Burning Bridges” is a jazzy, acoustic instrumental before “Gone” suggests further shades of The Police and features another brilliantly executed guitar solo. “Gettin’ It Right” and “Inner City Blues”, a couple of funky rockers, are followed by “Give You The World”, a sensitive ballad, and the closing track, “Mr Johnson Revisited”, a beautifully played, mellow instrumental.
There are currently many fine, young, blues-oriented guitarists in the UK but Mitch Laddie offers something different from many of his peers in that he very comfortably mixes vibrant blues-rock with gentler, more lyrical compositions. He is most definitely a force to be reckoned with and we can look forward to his increasing presence on the British blues scene. The considerable skill of Rhian Wilkinson and Lee Clifford in his engine room also deserves full acknowledgement.

Northern Finland band Zenith Reunion will be hitting our streets and ears hard come April 25th, with their metal combining heavy influences like that of: Stone, Tarot, Zero Nine, Accept, Dream Theater. The exceptionally beautifully pieced together guitar progressions and the overwhelming bass and drums creating itself a fort of sheer magnitudes has this band making an impression not only vocally but also musically.
With high octane progressions in ‘Can’t feel the Pain’ you are led into an almost ‘Joe Satriani’feel and movement where the music carries these anthems deep to the point of destruction. As soon as ‘Jouni Juurikka’ starts his vocals everything changes, add to this the mixture between the backing vocals you have yourself a very catchy song. Solos beyond the average metal band putting them in lines with that of ‘Marty Friedman, Jason Becker’. ‘Naked Boy’ has a start almost too gentle with that ‘Steve Vai – Celluloid Heroes’ feel to it, with the gentle progressions of drums and bass riding this atmospheric song into its own dimension. Again the contrast between the vocalists and the music keeps you hooked to the music, and this is only song 2!
As you progress through the album you will eventually make your way to the very emotional ‘FF’where all things that could be possible in one song become alive. With the Tapping sequence in‘Darkness Fall’ to the standards of ‘Cacophony’ and the mixture of riffs between hard rock, metal, and blues, this has everything I could ever wish for.
Between the Blues and metal there are so many things going for this band, including the fast power-based riffs, drums to keep the body moving, high octane and beautifully played solo’s, the bass driven articulations and the overall shout out to the music world this album is ideal for those that like great rock/heavy metal.

ANCARA is a band from Finland with a lot of history going on. It was formed back in the mid-80s under the name of Metal Circus before changing its name during the nineties to Resistance, and finally to Ancara in 1996.
"Chasing Shadows" is Ancara's third album, recorded and released in 2009 only in Finland through their own label. Now, after 3 long years of wait, it is presented and distributed worldwide.
This move is the tip of the iceberg for the international presentation of the band, who are in their first European tour right now and has recorded a totally new album in Los Angeles, Hollywood, to be released later this year.
Ancara plays a commercial Melodic Hard Rock with a typical Finnish style and sound. The band has been connected in the past with their compatriots Brother Firetribe, so this gives you a clear idea about the music: rockin' tunes with a nod to the '80s / '90s.
Ancara's strength are self-evident. Good song composition with strong melodies, vocal harmonies and clever hooks are strengthened by skillful musicianship. Mostly the arrangements are creative, a fresh interpretation upon the classic melodic hard rock theme without sacrificing familiarity.
You hear this at the start with "We Paint December", which offers a bit metal edgy guitars with a fine harmonious vocal arrangement.
We have more gritty hard rock in the chords of "Lodestar", only to be tempered by the melodic hook of the chorus.
Then there's simply classic melodic hard rock, with modern touches sometimes but still familiar, in "Far From Grace", the title track "Chasing Shadows", "High Hopes" and the finisher "Farewell". That last song is pure arena-ready rock.
On the balladry side, "Tears With Smile" is moody and dark slow tune with 2005's Finnish Idols finalist AGNES (Pihlava) on a vocal duet.
Ancara's "Chasing Shadows" offers a fresh and entertaining interpretation of Eighties & Nineties melodic hard rock, with strong, solid compositions.
There's a welcomed diversity to the songs influenced by many acts but each standing with its own integrity. Brother Firetribe and H.E.A.T comes to mind, of course not yet with their high quality standards.
I hear little doubts in some vocal parts and in how some arrangements are rounded, but keeping in mind that these songs where recorded & produced by themselves, this is a minor point. I'm sure these issues were corrected in the forthcoming album, as with an expertise producer this band has a tremendous potential.
If you like the sound & style of the present European Melodic Rock (specially Scandinavian) scene, you need to check "Chasing Shadows" pronto.

Legendary band THE CULT is back with the new album "Choice Of Weapon", featuring the original core duo of Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy.
The disc sees the band returning to their good, hard rocking sound & style which made them famous during the late eighties / early nineties. The two already released singles are a clear proof of that.
Frontman Ian Astbury says the band intended to tap into a primal power on the new CD.
"While The Cult have always been open to a wide range of influences, some people feel the need to pigeonhole us," says Astbury.
"We've always been an outsider group; we don't seem to fit completely with an existing genre, although the new material is hard rock oriented.
The song "For The Animals" reflects the sentiment that we are a raw, visceral animal, independent and beholden to no one. We celebrate that aspect that is also rising in the culture. We go where nature takes us."
Judging the two singles, "Choice Of Weapon" will be a return to the good hard rockin' days for THE CULT. Surely part of this are the expert hands of Bob Rock (METALLICA, MOTLEY CRUE) producing, I can hear his touch on both tracks.
I love The Cult, can't wait until the album hit the stores on May 22nd.
