ANCARA is a band from Finland with a lot of history going on. It was formed back in the mid-80s under the name of Metal Circus before changing its name during the nineties to Resistance, and finally to Ancara in 1996.

"Chasing Shadows" is Ancara's third album, recorded and released in 2009 only in Finland through their own label. Now, after 3 long years of wait, it is presented and distributed worldwide.
This move is the tip of the iceberg for the international presentation of the band, who are in their first European tour right now and has recorded a totally new album in Los Angeles, Hollywood, to be released later this year.

Ancara plays a commercial Melodic Hard Rock with a typical Finnish style and sound. The band has been connected in the past with their compatriots Brother Firetribe, so this gives you a clear idea about the music: rockin' tunes with a nod to the '80s / '90s.
Ancara's strength are self-evident. Good song composition with strong melodies, vocal harmonies and clever hooks are strengthened by skillful musicianship. Mostly the arrangements are creative, a fresh interpretation upon the classic melodic hard rock theme without sacrificing familiarity.
You hear this at the start with "We Paint December", which offers a bit metal edgy guitars with a fine harmonious vocal arrangement.
We have more gritty hard rock in the chords of "Lodestar", only to be tempered by the melodic hook of the chorus.
Then there's simply classic melodic hard rock, with modern touches sometimes but still familiar, in "Far From Grace", the title track "Chasing Shadows", "High Hopes" and the finisher "Farewell". That last song is pure arena-ready rock.
On the balladry side, "Tears With Smile" is moody and dark slow tune with 2005's Finnish Idols finalist AGNES (Pihlava) on a vocal duet.

Ancara's "Chasing Shadows" offers a fresh and entertaining interpretation of Eighties & Nineties melodic hard rock, with strong, solid compositions.
There's a welcomed diversity to the songs influenced by many acts but each standing with its own integrity. Brother Firetribe and H.E.A.T comes to mind, of course not yet with their high quality standards.
I hear little doubts in some vocal parts and in how some arrangements are rounded, but keeping in mind that these songs where recorded & produced by themselves, this is a minor point. I'm sure these issues were corrected in the forthcoming album, as with an expertise producer this band has a tremendous potential.
If you like the sound & style of the present European Melodic Rock (specially Scandinavian) scene, you need to check "Chasing Shadows" pronto.

Legendary band THE CULT is back with the new album "Choice Of Weapon", featuring the original core duo of Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy.
The disc sees the band returning to their good, hard rocking sound & style which made them famous during the late eighties / early nineties. The two already released singles are a clear proof of that.

Frontman Ian Astbury says the band intended to tap into a primal power on the new CD.
"While The Cult have always been open to a wide range of influences, some people feel the need to pigeonhole us," says Astbury.
"We've always been an outsider group; we don't seem to fit completely with an existing genre, although the new material is hard rock oriented.
The song "For The Animals" reflects the sentiment that we are a raw, visceral animal, independent and beholden to no one. We celebrate that aspect that is also rising in the culture. We go where nature takes us."

Judging the two singles, "Choice Of Weapon" will be a return to the good hard rockin' days for THE CULT. Surely part of this are the expert hands of Bob Rock (METALLICA, MOTLEY CRUE) producing, I can hear his touch on both tracks.
I love The Cult, can't wait until the album hit the stores on May 22nd.

The story of “Lost in the New Real” follows Mr. L, a twenty-first century man who was cryopreserved at the moment of clinical death from a terminal disease. The album begins as Mr. L is being revived at a point in the distant future, when technology has advanced enough to cure his disease. Mr L finds himself in a world that has drastically changed — to the point that the line between what’s real and what’s not is no longer clear.

Mr. L’s appointed psychological advisor (played by Rutger Hauer) is tasked with helping him emotionally adapt to this strange new world. The songs on CD1 follow the main character Mr. L’s emotional journey as he is confronted with both serious and comical aspects of the “New Real”, and desperately tries to decide if he can find a meaningful place within it.

CD2 is a mix of songs that are part of the concept but didn’t fit on CD1, and cover songs that are (more or less) related to the concept. As Arjen’s fans have come to expect, informative and humorous ‘behind the scenes’ videos are added to both CDs as CD-rom tracks. This beautiful 2-CD Limited Edition Mediabook is illustrated by the striking artwork of Claudio Bergamin.

I feel genuinely bad for anyone who has to classify Dark Empire under this or that genre. You’d have to cut them into pieces and add one each to the progressive, power, death, and thrash folders. Those are just the influences I myself am picking up on, others may find even more. Whatever it is, it’s great music and as a result of its eclecticism it should appeal to a very wide audience.

Ever since their sophomore effort, Humanity Dethroned, Dark Empire’s lineup has been a bloody mess. The most significant change for many will be the exit of Jens Carlsson (whose future with Savage Circus is also questionable) and the entrance of the unknown Brian Larkin, after Urban Breed briefly flirted with the idea to join the band. Larkin handles himself very well and I can’t honestly say I miss Carlsson despite the man’s obvious talents. The newcomer reminds me of Sons Of Seasons’ Henning Basse, who also possesses the ability to go from deceptively soft to openly aggressive in a matter of syllables. Although I’m quite sure Breed would have fit into this role quite nicely as well.

French band Children in Paradise creates a fusion of prog rock/Celtic folk music that I wasn’t even aware I was missing.  Their debut albumEsyllt (Isolde) is a richly layered composition.  The lyrics are poignant & tell a human story while the music is filled with beautiful progressions.  No cookie-cutter music here.

Kathy Millot aka “Dam Kat” has a voice like dark honey.  Think Tori Amos, Enya, and Ani DiFranco with a side of Amy Lee & Pink.  On Little Butterfly her voice creates such an aching atmosphere you can almost feel your heart break.  The guitar progressions are electric blues–dirty, pining notes that strip my soul.

Gwalc’hmei‘s guitar flies through the melancholy of King Arthur’s Death.  Vocals that speak of longing & promise balance the atmospheric prog.

I get comfortable with the music & mood when the delightful surprise of Loic Bléjean‘s uilleann pipes lilt into My Son.  Countering this traditional Irish instrument is Gwalc’hmei’s blistering guitar riffs.  This is honest-to-God rock n roll.  Eddie Van Halen on his best day would find this challenging.

The Battle is a good piece but it rockets to the stratosphere of epic at 4:18- Guitar & uilleann pipes intertwine into an animal like no other.  My jaw is on the floor…this ain’t your grand-pappy’s Celtic folk music.

Overall this is a remarkable debut album.  The entire album is filled with soul–living, breathing music that will reach your innermost being.  There are moments of pure prog bliss in these songs.  I do find that the songs become just a mite formulaic by the end of the album.  I know that about halfway through any particular song I’m going to find the heavy electric guitar solos.  While this isn’t a bad thing I think that mixing up the song structure would have elevated this album to instant classic status.  I recommend you grab this record; put it on & fall into the ancient Celtic world with a prog rock twist.

Austria’s Crimson Cult entered the scene in 2008 with a very well respected self-titled debut. The band has returned with “Tales of Doom” and there is absolutely no sign of a sophomore jinx. With the crushing groove laden traditional metal riffs of Günter Maier (Ex-Stygma IV/Ex-Flood Of Ages) and Dio-esque vocals of Walter Stuefer, this band represents one “cult” that I am ready to join, drink the kool-aid with, and die to find the mothership hidden behind a metallic comet!

So many newer bands try to capture the pure essence of traditional metal, but few succeed at doing what Crimson Cult has done in such a short time. By toning the traditional metal sound down slightly to add a brush of doomy glare (similar to Grand Magus) and adding great, albeit slightly raw, production, the band pulls off a winner. It doesn't take long for opener “State of Fear” to knock you in the jaw with a heavy up-tempo riff that throttles you and heightens the senses of what you can expect with the rest of the album. The grooves on tracks like “Behind the Curtain,” “Institution Christ” and “Choshinja” are firmly entrenched in Iommi with a tad less doom, but with just as much punch. "The Inquisition" adds a keen Spanish flair as I half expected Antonio Banderas to provide guest vocals.

The nine plus minute epic “The Long Way Home” is packed with blistering crunchy riffs that command headbanging glory. In all that time it rarely lags, save for the slight slowdown and apparent nod to Pink Floyd with lyrics “Hello, is there anybody out there” and “Dark Side of the Moon” and the final minute acoustic interlude with the screaming baby. The majority of the song punishes the listener like a bat to the skull. Same can be said for “Crimson Empire” and the Saxon like “Second Life.”

With all that said, the track that will get an instant nomination for song of the year from yours truly is the great “Warrior Son.” The song is like a ritual that summons the forces of Dio, Saxon, and Grand Magus into one massive groove riff that lives on in my head from the very first listen. Here, Stuefer sounds creepily familiar to the late Ronnie James Dio.

Equally as great, but in a much different way is “On the Edge,” which is as close to a ballad as “Tales of Doom” allows. It’s a highly enjoyable contrast to “Warrior Son,” especially in its placement just after. The sound has an overtone that reminds me, oddly enough, like a combination of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” When I hear the melody, I cannot stop my mind from singing “Here I am…sitting in a tin can.”

All in all, metalheads should give Crimson Cult some high praise for this really enjoyable traditional metal release. With any luck, this new-new wave of traditional metal, when done as properly as “Tales of Doom,” will catch on and reinforce what was truly lost years ago for many years to come.
