Life Among the Ruins" was the fifth full-length studio album by U.S. heavy metal band Virgin Steele. It was originally released in 1993 and was the first album with bassist Rob DeMartino, who replaced Joe O'Reilly, retired from the scene.
David DeFeis comments on the re-release: "We will shortly be re-releasing our Life Among The Ruins album. This 2012 version will be in digi-pak form and contain not one...but 2 discs with a large amount of extra ingredients. On the first disc we include 5 rare & unvarnished acoustic recordings, plus a full band bonus track. On disc #2 we have included 20 tracks. These tracks consist of a large amount of newly recorded material completed just this week, as well as alternate mixes of some of the album's original tracks. And in addition we have also included a never released track from somewhere around that period of time. All the material has been re-mastered, and the package will feature copious liner notes, photos and unique packaging!"

It's hard to believe its been 30 years since that iconic first Asia album, and its monster hits. That's the meaning of XXX (as opposed to more lascivious notion), the fifth album from the original members Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton, and the third since their reunion.
XXX seems more ambitious than its predecessor, Omega a rather mellow album of melodic rock. This album captures more the grandeur and energy of their earlier material, even the first album. Although I'm not sure there's anything as arena shattering as Heat of the Moment. But prog fans will dig tunes like Tomorrow the World and even Bury Me In Willow. Yet these are still, essentially, melodic rock songs. For that simple melodic rock brilliance Al Gatto Nero, the heavier Judas, and masterful No Religion are seminal Asia. That latter song could go in the arena or radio ready category. On that more mild side there's Faithful and Ghost of a Chance, a song with sound close to a mash up between Yes and Floyd.
Asia's XXX is simply classic Asia, doing intriguing melodic rock; maybe older and wiser, but still sharp and sounding good. I wish we could say the same for the latest version of Yes. Very recommended.
Hoping to capitalize on the new era digital media distribution is Sweden rockers Confidence. Casting aside labels and CD releases, Confidence plans to release all their material in a digital format (although I got a CD, thank you very much), basically four to five tunes, twice a year. Hail the new technology. Prelude is their debut, their first toe in the digital stream so to speak.
Private releases can be the most basic and crucial part of Rock music in general. In a self-financed release you clearly witness the work of a band, its struggle and frenzy, the dreams and motives, the naïve yet honest approach and the big ambitions as if the world waits for them. Whatever budget big companies can offer (or once offered, to be more precise) or tour promoters can put forward, it’s the private albums that have the most possibility for an outfit to share its musical scope and the potential fans to build a first draft basis.

Echolyn was formed in 1989 when guitarist Brett Kull and drummer Paul Ramsey, members of a recently split cover band called Narcissus, joined with keyboardist Chris Buzby to form a new band to focus on original songs. They were soon joined by fellow Narcissus veteran Ray Weston on vocals and bassist Jesse Reyes, and quickly began playing live and recording their eponymous debut album, which was released in 1991. During the recording of that album, Reyes was replaced on bass by Tom Hyatt.
With this lineup, Echolyn recorded a second album, Suffocating the Bloom, and a 4-song EP, ...and every blossom, and with these releases attracted the attention of Sony Music. In 1993, Echolyn was signed to a multi-album deal on Sony's Epic Records label, and their major-label debut, As the World, was released in March 1995.
