Pioneering hard rock guitar innovator Randy Pevler is no newcomer to the music scene and you can hear why on his 2011 CD Directions. Inspired by his freedom as an instrumental rock guitarist, Pevler, on Directions takes his sound in a number of different directions indeed, but he mostly sticks close to what he does best—the instrumental hard rock and progressive blues rock guitar genres. Track four, “Bluebeck” sounds like Jeff Beck jamming on a mid ‘70s John Lennon riff. A master of sonic diversity, Pevler takes his sound further out there into the realm of instro prog, while also occasionally adding in some spacy acoustic guitar moments. As if instinctively aware of the legacy of great guitarists before him, Pevler also manages to draw on the spirits of both Hendrix and 21st century guitar survivors Robin Trower and Peter Green. Both Hendrix and Trower fans will want to give a listen to another track highlight on Directions, “Two Hearts,” which also features some intriguing mellotron parts. Pairing his sizzling electric guitar work with the sound of dynamic drumming, Randy Pevler brings the hard rock instro sound well into the now. Pevler’s band is right there with him throughout theDirections album, which is topped off by a fine performance from Donny Sarian (drums, mellotron) with added support from a pair of bass players in Robby Pagliari and James LoMenzo. Thinking man’s metal with a progressive instrumental rock chaser, Randy Pevler’s Directions is the latest and perhaps greatest groundbreaking album from a continually evolving champion of the instrumental guitar world. www.RandyPevler.com

German power metal veterans Freedom Call throw down the gauntlet to the rest of the genre early in 2012 with the spellbinding new album that is Land Of The Crimson Dawn. Frontman Chris Bay accurately states in the press release that some of their new material marks a shift in style insofar as "the new tracks simply have more of that rock n roll feel". Certainly tracks like "Rockstars" and "Rockin' Radio" are more head banging crunchers as opposed to galloping sword and sorcery anthems but there is still enough of the latter spread across the CD's fourteen tracks to have their devoted following wielding their broadswords and proclaiming this as the power metal release of the year before January is at an end.
The mystical fantasy world that Freedom Call inhabits is at the forefront of guts and glory epics "Age of the Phoenix", "Crimson Dawn" and "66 Warriors", all of which capture the spirit of the battlefield. Land Of The Crimson Dawn marks the arrival to the band of new drummer Klaus Sperling who has replaced founder member Dan Zimmerman, the later being unable to commit to touring with his ongoing involvement in Gamma Ray, and Sperling proves to be a more than capable replacement with some powerful drumming throughout. There are plenty of uplifting and vibrant moments such as the blistering "Valley of Kingdom" with its effective riffing and Bray's soaring vocals in the ascendancy. But Freedom Call are not afraid to diversify with the stuttering, contemporary rocker that is "Sun in the Dark" being some way removed from the usual power metal blueprint but still delivered in such a way that it does not sound out of place. "Terra Liberty" is one part brooding rocker (riff and verse) and one part bombastic, galloping anthem (chorus) which makes for an effective combination. There is a Celtic vibe to the closing "Power & Glory" with the self-referencing lyrics and invitation to "a Heavy Metal party" ensuring this will be a huge live favourite when the band embarks on the next tour.
A majestic album from start to finish, all hail Freedom Call!

The Man Who Sold Himself is the third album from the collaboration between Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison and 05Ric, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and extended range bass player. The album will be released on Kscope on February 27th 2012 as a 2 disc set, featuring the album on CD as well as a 5.1 mix on DVD, allowing fans to enjoy the intricate complexities of the album in full surround glory.
In addition to being voted best Progressive Drummer four years in a row in the Modern Drummer Magazine's readers poll. He was also recently invited to perform on the David Letterman show as part of his Drum Solo week (see below).
Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Gavin has also played extensively with King Crimson as well as providing session drumming for a host of respected artists but his work with 05Ric has allowed him to develop some of the work that he has created outside these projects.
05Ric uses his voice, extended range bass and guitars to turn his love of sound into sonic tapestries. His vocals, virtuoso playing and a chance meeting between the two has led to one of the most interesting and complex musical collaborations in recent years.
The union of 05Ric’s distinctive style with Gavin’s extraordinary drumming has already produced some unique results but Gavin has stated that with The Man Who Sold Himself, 'we have continued to push the boundaries of our rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, I believe these are some of the wildest rhythmic concepts that I have ever conjured and 05Ric has snaked his bass around.'
05Ric goes on to explain that lyrically the album deals with themes “based on the greed of the financial global crisis, the empty shallowness of goal seeking without passion or for its own sake and the destructive force left behind by selfish behaviour - but the central character through heightened awareness and right action discovers his true calling.”
The album, which was written over the last two years and recorded in mid-2011, is the duo's first release since Circles in 2009. Circles was described by Classic Rock Prog as 'bristling with instrumental technique and firepower... it is peppered with a pulsating, muscular funk that pushes through generic barriers to create its own unique space.'

After months of rumors, Bruce Springsteen has finally announced the details of his 17th studio album. The disc is called Wrecking Ball and will hit shelves on March 6th. (Listen to a stream of the lead single "We Take Care Of Our Own" on Springsteen's official website.) "Bruce has dug down as deep as he can to come up with this vision of modern life," Springsteen's manager Jon Landau said in a statement. "The lyrics tell a story you can't hear anywhere else and the music is his most innovative of recent years. The writing is some of the best of his career and both veteran fans and those who are new to Bruce will find much to love on Wrecking Ball."
Two of the songs have been performed on previous tours. Springsteen debuted the title track at Giants Stadium in the fall of 2009 and played it regularly throughout the rest of the Working on a Dream tour. "Land of Hope and Dreams" was first performed on the the E Street Band's 1999 reunion tour. There are nine brand new songs on the album.
Wrecking Ball was produced by Ron Aniello – who has worked with Guster, Candlebox and Springsteen's wife Patti Scialfa – alongside Springsteen and executive producer Jon Landau. It features a wide variety of players, including guitarist Tom Morello, former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain and members of the E Street Band.
The album is a politically charged disc about the current state of America. Jon Landau tells Rolling Stone that the disc has "social overtones" and a "very pronounced spiritual dimension . . . It extends and deepens the vision that has animated all of Bruce's work."
A source told the Hollywood Reporter that the album has "unexpected textures – loops, electronic percussion . . . influences and rhythms from hip-hop to Irish folk rhythms."
According to multiple sources, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will kick off a world tour in March. A complete tracklisting from the album is below, as well as a video of Springsteen and the E Street Band playing the title track at Giants Stadium in October 2009.

Now, you may have already heard of a rather unusual musical / Power Metal project initiated by two friends from the Netherlands – who call themselves POWERIXTIX. Wait, you haven’t ? Then sit tight and and relax, for now it is your time to get to know these guys. Right – we are here to find out whether their album ETERNITY actually is something to care about – or, if it is just a sorry attempt to create something… unusual. POWERIXTIX consist of two main members, RIX and TIX – or, if you might want to call them by their real names – Erik and Tim. As you can see on their Blogspot-Page, they seem to be your not-so-ordinary at all Dutch’s, who have a serious affection for a genre many people out there tend to love – we are speaking about the overall Power Metal-genre indeed. And, what automatically comes along: the melody, the speed, the catchy choruses, the high-pitched vocals and… you know the rest. So, their idea was to produce a CD that has a certain ‘mix-tape’ touch, which is rather unusual in any Metal genre – some tend to know about similar productions from genres like Rap or RnB. Exactly the genres POWERIXIX would never listen to – as they often state in a humorous manner. So what kind of CD is ETERNITY, then ? Is it a CD you could carry over to a (Metal-)party, being assured that you have a various selection of uplifting Power Metal-tracks pounding through the speakers – or do we rather speak about a pure fun-project here, a CD that fraternizes their devotion to the Power Metal-genre ?
If you love the sound of the Pro-Tooled, slickly produced metal albums that are being churned out by the dozen these days, you'll want to skip over Christian Mistress.
While the Olympia, Washington-based metal band won't be winning over any fans who thrive on auto-tune and quantized drums, they should appeal to anyone hungry for a slab of traditional-minded heavy metal with a modern twist.
Their latest offering, Possession, picks up where their 2010 debut album, Agony & Opium, left off -- with the powerful pipes of Christine Davis providing a Doro-meets-Coven wail over the twin-guitar attack of Ryan McClain and Oscar Sparbel.
Possession, as any sophomore album should be, sees the band fine-tuning their sound, which mixes equal parts NWOBHM and good ol' fashioned American doom metal.
I recently caught up with guitarists Ryan McClain and Oscar Sparbel to talk guitar, Possession and the importance of noodling.
