NOW!DISCO HARD ROCK!

Yes, the idea of a taking the catalog of disco icons and re-imagining them in the world of heavy metal might seem a little weird, a little crazy. But give one listen to Tragedy: The All-Metal Tribute To The Bee Gees and you will be convinced that whoever came up with this idea is a genius.

What’s so amazing about this band is that, even though there’s a lot of humor woven into their DNA, they are absolutely phenomenal musicians. They were able to take a vaunted collection of international hits and seamlessly translate them into the world of vintage, late-’70s, early-’80s heavy metal. Power chords, blistering guitar solos, vocals that’ll shatter your ear drums and a thunderous percussion section — this is what Tragedy is all about. That, and a whole lot of glitter.

Pop-Break’s Bill Bodkin spoke with Tragedy’s lead vocalist, lead rhythm guitarist, lead back-up vocalist and lead cowbellist Robin Gibbens about their February Friday-night residency at The Brooklyn Bowl, their new record and things disco.

The recordings were made in the summer of 2010, mixing and mastering to be done at Studio Fredman (Sweden) with Fredrik Nordstrom and Henrik Udd (In Flames, Dream Evil, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Bring Me The Horizon) to make the production.

In 2012, Lion music will release first full THE MOOR album.

With nothing but passion being the driving force behind this progressive machine, PYRAMID THEOREM has nowhere to look but up.

The band’s music is nothing short of a musical journey with paralyzing epics that are irresistible to the ear. Their signature sound is derived from incredible lead guitar work; precise drumming, and experimental synth that completes the bands unstoppable fusion.

After the release of “Voyage to the Star” in 2008, the band broke themselves into Toronto’s music scene where they have proven themselves as one of the ultimate up and coming progressive rock acts by participating in many live events and receiving recording awards from participating competitions. Such accomplishments have given the band the opportunity to open for touring heavyweights: Sonata Artica, Edguy, Powerglove, Fair to Midland, and Symphony X.

NOW!

Who says classic metal is dead in America? This year we've had more than a few albums from American bands offering traditional metal. Here's Invasion from New Jersey's Fiakra, signed to Pure Underground Records, an imprint of Germany's Pure Steel Records.

By way of clarity, Invasion is the first album under this moniker. The band was formerly known as Hexen, releasing one album, Dark Crucible, an EP, and a demo. They changed their name since there was a Hexen already established in California. 'Fiakra,' they say, is a variation for 'raven' in ancient Gaelic.

While horror-themed music is represented in almost every musical genre, a good deal of it resides in the “punk” or “metal” category. Yes, horror-rap is available (horrorcore rapper Necro, for starters, and I think there may be a group that consists of rapping clowns, but I’m not sure…), and horror-themed surf is readily available (check out Thee Cormans for an excellent example, then maybe move on to The Bomboras or The Ghastly Ones), but horror-country? It’s not really a genre mash-up that’s been properly explored. Sure, there’s a ton of psychobilly available, but when it comes to honest-to-God country and bluegrass horror-themed music, there aren’t very many choices. The Unknown Hinson (of Squidbillies fame) is an obvious source for some great tunes, and Jesse Dayton’s alter ego Captain Clegg & The Night Creatures (formed specifically for Rob Zombie’s Halloween II) is another band worth a few listens. Getting down to the real nitty-gritty, though, it seems like this brand of horror music never found that one defining band that could serve as the face for the genre. This may all change with the rise of The Bloody Jug Band and their first, full-length LP Coffin Up Blood.

Biography MELDRUM is a multinational hard rock/metal band that has toured worldwide with Lemmy Kilmister's Motörhead, Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society, Sepultura, Danzig, Nashville Pussy, as well as sharing the stage with many more. Touting a combination of mammoth vocal styles along with aggressively melodic vocals, mind bending guitar riffs and a rhythm section that creates fiercely bombastic grooves, this is what gives MELDRUM their unique, cutting edge sound. Featuring a new lineup in 2008, their newest members include metal vocalist Michele Madden (Tourette's) and Laura Christine (Warface) on bass guitar. Michelle Meldrum, raised by parents in the entertainment business, began her career when she and drummer, Gene Hoglan, started their first band Wargod. Gene went on to notoriety with Death, Dark Angel, Testament, Fear Factory, Strapping Young Lad and many others, while Michelle founded Phantom Blue (on Shrapnel, Roadrunner, and Geffen Records). While her career was flourishing

NOW!

On the heels of last years long-player, The Second Time Around, singer songwriter Tony Desimone offers an EP of five songs, As We Go 'Round the Sun. I almost took a pass on the EP until I noticed he was covering one of my favorite Elvi songs, Suspicious Minds. More on this in a moment.

The other four songs are original to Desimone. The offer his traditional excellent lyricism and easy light melodic rock sound. The title track is lighter fare. The Rapture and The Line on My Horizon more electric, with great female vocal accompaniment. Of the originals here, the former is likely my favorite track. U & I has some odd vocal intonation from Desimone.

Time: Progressive Rock/Metal
Info: Mp3, CBR 256 kbps
Info: 149 M?

The history of this band goes all the way back to the 1970s; however, MAGICAL KARMA is only the second album of the Hanover-based rock veterans, helmed by multi-instrumentalist Wieland Hofmeister. This album is also the last record to ever be graced with the vocals of Andrew MAC McDermott (Threshold, Sergeant Fury), who died last year at age 45. It is this voice that adds a very special tone to the lushly arranged hybrid of art-rock and prog metal. The music is complex, and at times, even overloaded, but MAC’s voice always serves as the rock in the surf, as the railing the listener can hang onto in this wild sea of eclecticism. MAGICAL KARMA is heavier than YARGOS’ previous output, but that new heaviness is actually quite becoming. Listen to the final mammoth track, “The Wolves Howled (And You Pray)” if you don’t believe me. MAGICAL KARMA is an album that requires patience, but it is also the powerful legacy of a great singer.
