Bulgaria is not known as a hot bed of metal, much less a hot bed for power/progressive metal. Notable acts include the traditional metal band Rampart and power metal band Project Arcadia. Krossfire is a pure power/progressive band which has been a cohesive unit since 2008. The debut LP “Learning to Fly,” having been self-released in May 2011, now sees a worldwide release through Pure Steel Records. Krossfire offers a technically proficient style reminiscent of latter Symphony X with a strong Dragonland feel throughout. The album delivers highly skilled guitar work of Gerogi Kushev, spectacular albeit overly demonstrative, keyboard work from Peter Boshnakov, and topped off with the soaring vocals of Dimo Petkov.

“Learning to Fly” may be apropos for a normal debut, but from the very first listen Krossfire has clearly left the nest long ago. What we have here is a rarity: a debut release that shows as much maturity as from a band which has been at it for four or five releases. Take tracks like “False Reality,” “Cold Winds,” “Learning To Fly,” and “Warmachine” would fair very well against more established power/progressive acts. There is an overall epic feel, not in a cinematic Rhapsody style, but a neo-classical meets Dragonland style.

The only small drawback of the album lies with a portion of the sound. The album is crisp, clear, and clean, but at times the keyboards are way more demonstrative and tend to swallow up the song rather than give way to Kushev’s guitar work. Make no mistake, the keyboards drive the mood of this album and add a whole dimension to the sound, but there are times where they are way too up front in the mix rather than encircling behind and binding the rest of music together (examples: the beginning of “Angels Cry” and just as the guitar work starts on “Learning To Fly”). In addition, the snare drum sound is a bit “coffee can” like upon the first listen, but on each successive listen it becomes less and less impressionable.

Overall, Krossfire is highly impressive and looks to make a quick strike on the power/progressive scene. The band has all the tools necessary to do so and, with a slight tweak in the mix, is a hair away from hitting the upper echelon of the genre. It is a rare sight indeed for a band to be that close on its debut album!

Highs: Highly skilled power/progressive debut.

Mark Spiro is an American singer-songwriter with an impressive track record - 45 gold and platinum records, and six solo albums. He's written songs for a number of films and TV series - most notably the song "Mighty Wings" which was performed by Cheap Trick for the film Top Gun. He's written songs that have been recorded by bands including Heart, Winger and REO Speedwagon.

With that track record then I was looking forward to listening to this new album. Sadly that excitement didn't last long. The vocals are beautiful, the songs are well written (as you'd expect) and the guitar is lovely and melodic, but the drumming really feels flat and lifeless, and the album just lacks any punch - its rock's version of "Easy listening".
I suspect the problem comes from the lack of conflicting influences - like many albums where the songs are written, performed and produced by a single person then it falls short of greatness despite having a lot of potential.

The songs while all perfectly pleasant to listen to, are lacking in anything to make them stand out and be memorable - ten minutes after listening to the album the first time, not one song stuck in my mind at all.

I really can't get excited about this album I'm afraid. Quite a few melodic rock/AOR fans will probably like it and some may even rave about it, but for me it's just disappointing.

"It's a beautiful life" is due for release on 30th January 2012 on AOR Heaven.

Do you know anybody who collects old cars? I know. It is a very special hobby. Those people deserve a lot of respect. They spend their time saving old things, which almost nobody needs, but still have a lot of interest for it. What could be the main problem having this hobby? Since the old cars all the time need to be repaired, but it is very difficult to find details, which would fit… STAHLMANN is a very good band, which makes high class music. Moreover, they make it with lot of pleasure and love. And the release of the second album can prove it. But working in genre of NDH, even if they do it brilliant, they will always stay kind of weirdos.

This feeling was there as EISBRECHER appeared. Although it was not really long ago as NDH was a popular trend, but it was already lack of bands, who would dare to play that kind of music. EISBRECHER was like a sip of fresh water. With their debut, STAHLMANN did almost the same thing. But release of an NDH album last year could call not only for satisfaction, but also nostalgia, a smile of remembering old times. It was a wonder, that there is a band, which starting their way in 10s and wants to play music, which was popular 20 years ago and not a trend anymore. In any way it was a very nice album.

The second album of STAHLMANN is great from the first till the last accord, even better than their debut. Guitars are deeper, the sound is richer, melodies are more original, lyrics are more interesting comparing to the first album, and vocals are as great as they were. Listening to this album, listeners loving NDH things would feel nothing but pleasure. The only question stays open: How come a modern band still plays this old kind of music? Where were they when this music was popular? So without any modern support STAHLMANN collects their new old cars from the details which were already used once by somebody else

The second album by Epignosis, Mr. Brown has really made great strides forward all around, (from what was an already impressive debut).

For those unfamiliar, Epignosis plays a melodic, textured and symphonic style of progressive rock. This is the path followed taken again on "Refulgence" and while not unprecedented, it does not need to be. Instead of sprawling, dense epics that test your patience and tolerance of self indulgence, "Refulgence" is a very mellow album, dominated by piano and synth, ripe with acoustic and clean guitar, with some crunchy guitar tones thrown in, harmonious bass and punctuated with soothing vocals. Brown's wife, Tasha, has an increased role on this album and her vocals can be described best as angelic. Wish their natural voices could shine throughout and not occasionally dive into effects, which happens a few times, but that is just the personal preference of this reviewer.

The songs on "Refulgence" have been trimmed down, (or maybe simply broken up) and instead of the 8 minute + songs heard on "Still the Waters" there are more here, all under 6 minutes in length with one exception: the 17 minute self titled track. After an ambient intro piece, said title track begins and is really a microcosm of the album. Everything is here in one song, drifting gently from section to section and has quite a variety within its frame. Also here one will notice the greatly improved drumming, which, (while not a buzz kill on "Still the Waters") was a bit rough at times and lackluster. The physical sound is much improved with this album, as is the actual drumming. On a related note, while not really an issue before, the overall production is also better...and kudos to Brown for developing as a complete musician.
