PRETTY MAIDS is one of the greatest bands ever, and chances are good you’ve never heard of them.
I consider these Danish wonders to be one of four that are horribly overlooked in the USA. The other three are Talisman, Thunder and Harem Scarem.
Sure, there are other groups out there that are far more deserving of the recognition than they receive compared to 99.9% of the top 40 garbage, but all four of these bands are the most extreme examples of groups not huge phenom’s around the world.
And frankly, I think Pretty Maids is the band that tops that list.

How Pretty Maids aren’t at the level of success of Bon Jovi, Def Leppard or Journey completely baffles me. You will find no group that has more consistently released incredible music from their first album to their most recent.
They have a catalog filled with catchy and powerful songs, chock full of melody yet with a hard edge not found in the above mentioned mega-bands.
Musically you will find no pairing that meshes as well as the ever constant core of Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer. With Atkins you have a vocalist able to sing some of the most beautiful lines you can imagine then go into a growl that is intense, but not so grating as to detract from the songs. Match that with the guitar prowess of Hammer and you’ve got a musical duo that ranks as high as any other (I’m looking at you Jagger / Richards, Perry / Tyler, Schon / Steve Perry).

While listening to their latest release on Frontiers Records, an incredible career spanning live opus entitled "It Comes Alive", I hear these astounding songs like “Hell On High Heels”, “Walk Away”, “Yellow Rain”, “Future World” or “Savage Heart” and I ponder many things.
For starters, I would stand any of their songs up against any of the big hits of Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and will state clearly that there’s no competition. Pretty Maids has catchy songs full of more hooks, fantastic vocals, sing-along chorus’ than both those bands combined.

They can go from the hardest of rockers like “Red Hot and Heavy” to the sweetest of ballads with “Savage Heart” without missing a beat or losing the listener. And unlike both Bon Jovi and Def Leppard - and this is made obvious listening to "It Comes Alive" - that after 30 years in the business they haven’t changed what they do one iota yet remained true to their sound. A still sound fan-tas-tic.
Not to pick on either of those other bands, but they have some serious clunkers in their catalogs respectively. I also have no personal beef with either Jovi or Leppard, I consider myself a true fan of most of their material, but they’re still able to do big tours and sell records, while Pretty Maids is more or less unheard of after slogging away for three decades.
I’m sorry, but what the hell is wrong with people?

If it’s not clear that I am a rabid Pretty Maids fan, I’ll just say it straight out: I have loved these guys for many years now.
I remember just like it was yesterday the first time their video for “Future World” (from the outstanding '87 album of the same title) came on to The Headbanger’s Ball on MTV. The blazing guitar lick and the galloping keyboard melody had me from the first few seconds.
I immediately got the vinyl as import and played it repeatedly. Sadly, due to the fact that they barely made an impact on the scene, I didn’t know they had albums prior, nor was able to keep up with them until much later on.

"It Comes Alive" showed me beyond a shadow of a doubt that not only do the songs stand the test of time, but their actual performances are just as powerful and fresh as if they were a new band. And despite the fact that they’re not as huge as they should be, they have a devoted following as evidenced by the audience participation.
Ronnie directs the crowd to sing along, and from the word go the crowd is fully into it. He’s not forced to do the 'I can’t hear you!' shtick so many bands have to do to get the crowd going. The crowd is already singing along!
This CD is so incredible you almost feel like you’re in the crowd as well, singing along, even though you’re in your car driving to work.

I realize that live albums aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. I respect that. I don’t listen to live albums as much as I used to.
However, Pretty Maids' "It Comes Alive" is too incredible to miss. And I don’t think there was much (if any) touch-up work done on this album, as typically happens with live recordings. The sound and the vibe in this double CD is out of this World.
This is where all started guys. Pretty Maids were - and healthy are - one of the pioneers of the Melodic Hard Rock scene.
In short, regarding "It Comes Alive - Maid in Switzerland";
Q: Do you like classic, killer Melodic Hard Rock in its purest form?
A: You will be blown away.
Q: Do you dislike live albums?
A: You will be blown away.

Sure, we had to wait for this quite a bit but the important thing is that it finally happened. Vocalist Michael Kiske and guitarist Kai Hansen, both of Helloween’s Keeper of the Seven Keys fame, joined forces in an actual band! Before this we could occasionally hear the two together on a couple of Kiske’s solo tracks or on Gamma Ray’s and Avantasia’s albums. But Unisonic is the real deal; around 50 minutes of pure rock-metal genius – a treat for everyone who appreciates the talent of these two nice ex-Helloween fellows.

Some might wonder whether Unisonic’s self-titled debut album is metal, which would be a dream come true for most Helloween fans, or perhaps hard rock-AOR that Kiske seemed to have preferred in the recent years, but such genre labels matter not if the material is as good as in this particular case. If anything, the fact that Kiske mostly composes rock songs and Hansen usually stays faithful to metal only adds to the overall value of the album. Unisonic is, therefore, not just a thunderball of great guitar riffs but also sports some beautiful melodies, thoughtful lyrics and, most importantly, enough song-writing variety to keep us redefining the album with each single track.

It starts off in the most anthemic way possible; the title track sweeps the listeners off their feet within seconds with some inspired guitar work and neck-wrecking rhythm, and then totally knocks them out with a powerful chorus. The next several songs – electrifying “Souls Alive,” optimistic “Never Change Me” and relaxed “I’ve Tried” – also mercilessly attack us with their sharp hooks. Even in case of somewhat mellower moments, like near the end of otherwise springy “My Sanctuary,” one can feel there’s some cosmic energy boiling right under the surface, while “King for a Day” marks a return to heavier, Gamma Ray-esque style. In yet another highlight – “Star Rider” – Unisonic successfully try their hand in atmospheric, sci-fi-scented songwriting. They finish off on a more melancholic note with “No One Ever Sees Me,” an emotional track with great lyrics and a beautiful vocal performance by Kiske.

Although Kiske and Hansen are the band’s main stars, there’s this feeling throughout the whole album that Unisonic – with Pink Cream 69’s Kosta Zafiriou on drums and Dennis Ward on bass plus Gotthard’s Mandy Meyer on guitar, is a very homogenous entity and not just a side project of two heavy metal veterans. Anyway, the word “veterans” sounds rather off here, doesn’t it? After all these years Kiske and Hansen sound fresh and energetic as they’ve ever had. Unisonic was never meant to become a clone of Helloween’s early albums and it is anything but that, but it certainly does manage to recapture the youthful vibe of the vocalist and guitarist’s groundbreaking 1980s efforts.

Having picked up a name for themselves over the last few years as a UK band to keep your eye on, Brighton’s FURYON have finally signed to Frontiers Records for the release of their debut full-length album "Gravitas", and what a debut it is.

Combining the swagger of classic British Hard Rock bands, the dynamics of modern metal and a sense of the '90s heaviness, the songs in "Gravitas" are played with heart, no doubt having been finely honed around the clubs that the band have been playing since their formation, and the musicianship is similar to that of a band that have been playing together forever.
Consisting of vocalist Matt Mitchell, guitarists Chris Green and Pat Heath, bass player Alex Bowen and drummer Lee Farmery, Furyon grab the listener from the opening guitar invitations of first track "Disappear Again", and never releases until it is ready to depart when it chooses.
The song epitomises the whole album, infectious, intelligent and unafraid to court the ear with addictive melodies, heavily loaded riffs and a catchiness which is hard to deny submission to.

Following track "Stand Like Stone" immediately shows the diversity of the band's sound and stylings. Its heavy tumbling rhythms and formidable metallic riffs burst through the ear. With a groove that beckons like a loose woman the song fills every pore with well crafted melodies and the impressive vocals of Mitchell.
In two songs he sets the quality of his tones and delivery, something that never drops throughout the album. The guitars and melodies are quite wanton, eager to excite and thrill, which they do with incredible songwriting skills and realisation.

Songs like the excellent "Souvenirs" with its lovely deep crusty bass lines, the mainstream radio feel of "New Way Of Living" offering a glorious and dense hard rock majesty, and the mesmeric "Wasted On You", come and go with wonderful quality and the ability to light up the senses.
The CD actually hits its peak around the mid-way point, with the slinky rocker "Voodoo Me" and one of the album highlights, "Fear Alone", with echoes of soulful nineties looser hard rock.
There is one track that eclipses all though, and that is the magnificent "Desert Suicide", a song which marks that Furyon isn't just another band of the herd. Structured with a mystical and a subdued atmosphere, the guitars slow to reveal themselves. Soon it evolves into a mighty beast of sound, slowly pacing around the ear before its muscular legs start to run with the senses though it never explodes outright. An addictive yet unpredictable track; the height of invention without indulgence, a stirring animal that remains inside long after the album departs.

Most of you must remember the well-regarded British 2000's melodic hard rock band Pride. Vocalist Matt Mitchell and guitar player Chris Green where members of Pride, but part ways to found a more rocking oriented band, and Furyon born.
"Gravitas" is a mighty slab of really well crafted songs infused with traditional hard rock, metal and classic rock influences, all wrapped into a truly unique and contemporary hard hitting sound that will stand the test of time.
You will be  by the creativity and the technically challenging yet infectiously catchy musicianship of Furyon.
Simply, "Gravitas" is one of the most compelling, notable and promising debuts by a British heavy rock band in years, and a great indicator of greater things to come for Furyon.
Highly Recommended.

Now that everyone has seen (and loved) the star-studded Tenacious D comeback video "To Be the Best," it's time to listen to the first single from their new album, the title track for "Rize of the Fenix." The album is set to be released on May 15.

The rock comedy duo's first movie, 2006's "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny," is now considered a cult classic by many, but it's largely viewed as a bomb -- it made a total of only $8.2 million, even at the height of D frontman Jack Black's box office power. But the band is embracing the theme of resurrection on their new album, and the title track is entirely devoted to earning back the good name of the band, who first earned fame with an HBO series and Dust Brothers-produced rock album.

Owing more than a little to the riff-heavy arena rock stylings of bands like Boston and Styx, and sounding a lot like the mini-suite "City Hall" from their first album, the single "Rize of the Fenix" aims to win back fans. And of course, the only way to do that is to rock even harder than they ever have before.
