French band Children in Paradise creates a fusion of prog rock/Celtic folk music that I wasn’t even aware I was missing.  Their debut albumEsyllt (Isolde) is a richly layered composition.  The lyrics are poignant & tell a human story while the music is filled with beautiful progressions.  No cookie-cutter music here.

Kathy Millot aka “Dam Kat” has a voice like dark honey.  Think Tori Amos, Enya, and Ani DiFranco with a side of Amy Lee & Pink.  On Little Butterfly her voice creates such an aching atmosphere you can almost feel your heart break.  The guitar progressions are electric blues–dirty, pining notes that strip my soul.

Gwalc’hmei‘s guitar flies through the melancholy of King Arthur’s Death.  Vocals that speak of longing & promise balance the atmospheric prog.

I get comfortable with the music & mood when the delightful surprise of Loic Bléjean‘s uilleann pipes lilt into My Son.  Countering this traditional Irish instrument is Gwalc’hmei’s blistering guitar riffs.  This is honest-to-God rock n roll.  Eddie Van Halen on his best day would find this challenging.

The Battle is a good piece but it rockets to the stratosphere of epic at 4:18- Guitar & uilleann pipes intertwine into an animal like no other.  My jaw is on the floor…this ain’t your grand-pappy’s Celtic folk music.

Overall this is a remarkable debut album.  The entire album is filled with soul–living, breathing music that will reach your innermost being.  There are moments of pure prog bliss in these songs.  I do find that the songs become just a mite formulaic by the end of the album.  I know that about halfway through any particular song I’m going to find the heavy electric guitar solos.  While this isn’t a bad thing I think that mixing up the song structure would have elevated this album to instant classic status.  I recommend you grab this record; put it on & fall into the ancient Celtic world with a prog rock twist.

Austria’s Crimson Cult entered the scene in 2008 with a very well respected self-titled debut. The band has returned with “Tales of Doom” and there is absolutely no sign of a sophomore jinx. With the crushing groove laden traditional metal riffs of Günter Maier (Ex-Stygma IV/Ex-Flood Of Ages) and Dio-esque vocals of Walter Stuefer, this band represents one “cult” that I am ready to join, drink the kool-aid with, and die to find the mothership hidden behind a metallic comet!

So many newer bands try to capture the pure essence of traditional metal, but few succeed at doing what Crimson Cult has done in such a short time. By toning the traditional metal sound down slightly to add a brush of doomy glare (similar to Grand Magus) and adding great, albeit slightly raw, production, the band pulls off a winner. It doesn't take long for opener “State of Fear” to knock you in the jaw with a heavy up-tempo riff that throttles you and heightens the senses of what you can expect with the rest of the album. The grooves on tracks like “Behind the Curtain,” “Institution Christ” and “Choshinja” are firmly entrenched in Iommi with a tad less doom, but with just as much punch. "The Inquisition" adds a keen Spanish flair as I half expected Antonio Banderas to provide guest vocals.

The nine plus minute epic “The Long Way Home” is packed with blistering crunchy riffs that command headbanging glory. In all that time it rarely lags, save for the slight slowdown and apparent nod to Pink Floyd with lyrics “Hello, is there anybody out there” and “Dark Side of the Moon” and the final minute acoustic interlude with the screaming baby. The majority of the song punishes the listener like a bat to the skull. Same can be said for “Crimson Empire” and the Saxon like “Second Life.”

With all that said, the track that will get an instant nomination for song of the year from yours truly is the great “Warrior Son.” The song is like a ritual that summons the forces of Dio, Saxon, and Grand Magus into one massive groove riff that lives on in my head from the very first listen. Here, Stuefer sounds creepily familiar to the late Ronnie James Dio.

Equally as great, but in a much different way is “On the Edge,” which is as close to a ballad as “Tales of Doom” allows. It’s a highly enjoyable contrast to “Warrior Son,” especially in its placement just after. The sound has an overtone that reminds me, oddly enough, like a combination of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” When I hear the melody, I cannot stop my mind from singing “Here I am…sitting in a tin can.”

All in all, metalheads should give Crimson Cult some high praise for this really enjoyable traditional metal release. With any luck, this new-new wave of traditional metal, when done as properly as “Tales of Doom,” will catch on and reinforce what was truly lost years ago for many years to come.

The revival of legendary band Running Wild should come as pleasant surprise to fans. Three years ago, vocalist, guitarist, and currently the only member, Rolf Kasparek abruptly folded the band, without offering much explanation. Now he returns with Shadowmaker, the first Running Wild album in seven years.

Running Wild Rolf Kasparek Photo
Running Wild's Rolf Kasparek: the pirate sets sail again.

Shadowmaker will likely please fans; it's rather typical Kasparek/Running Wild. Here's melodic metal that could pass for edgier hard rock. Being labeled 'pirate metal' in the early days, these themes are revisited on Riding on the Tide and Sailing Fire, two rousing songs. Then there's some party metal rock in Piece of the Action and Me + the Boys. I can't recall ever hearing a heavy metal song about trains, but Kasparek was able to craft a good one with Locomotive. Another fine tune, is his autobiographical metal anthem, I Am Who I Am, where he sounds like Popeye the Sailor Man. Those are the best tracks here. However, I suspect fans will dig the power metal of Into the Black, maybe the lengthy and dull, Dracula, not so much.

Otherwise, Shadowmaker is simply Kasparek's Running Wild pirate ship relaunched and right back on course. Nothing extraordinary, but still entertaining. Recommended.

The most difficult pill to swallow when it comes to FeedForward, is that the band themselves take it all with militant seriousness, blind to the sophomoric nature of the work. It should be a huge amount of nostalgic fun, but instead, it all washes off into whimsical daftness.

Their riffing owes influence to the likes of Marillion and Whitesnake; inevitably when the vocal gets raging they sound like most progressive-cum-eighties conversions of Nightwish. They’re an ambitious collective though, with the tracks often fractured enough to warrant an arrangement slinging in early Nightwish (think “Elvenpath”) – which is much less of a complement than you might think.

Early Nightwish was haggardly under produced, and it puts into focus that aspiring progressive acts really ought to leap onto a producers shoulders to convert their big ideas into something believable; needed to create the dips in energy for the verse extensions not to wearingly drag on, and clever twists to swirl the elements in a track. Three amps, a microphone, and a drum kit, simply isn’t enough anymore.

The buzz has been building and word of mouth rife about a new force in UK metal; a band that is turning heads and receiving increasing focus upon them, amidst claims thrown that they are destined to be the next big thing. Of course, being signed by Roadrunner Records mid 2010 did not exactly hold back the intensity and pressure placed upon them. Now, with the release of their debut album,“Revenge For The Ruthless”, we get to find out if there is any substance to the hype surrounding Welsh band Revoker. The quartet, having been friends at school and a musical unit since 2006, show a tightness that many bands struggle ever to achieve and each member is exceptional in their own right and fit seamlessly in the beast that is Revoker.

The Twisted Sister frontman is no stranger to Broadway, having performed in Rock Of Ages onstage back in 2010. Still, the last thing you’d expect to hear Dee Snider singing are songs like “Big Spender” or “Luck Be A Lady.” Yet that’s exactly what he did withDee Does Broadway, an album full of Broadway covers sung by Snider himself.

Of course, there have been some great rock operas/ musicals to grace Broadway. However, Snider purposefully chose not to sing songs from a few obvious titles, saying:

“Over the past year I have worked closely with my team and collaborators picking from decades of musical hits with only two rules: The song had to speak to me as a singer on some level, and it could not be a rock song to begin with. No Jesus Christ SuperstarGreaseHairRentRocky Horror, etc.  What would be the challenge in that? There are many who think doing an album of rocked out show tunes is pure insanity on my part. Apparently, they haven’t seen any photos of me from the 70’s and 80’s.  Could I have been in a more theatrical band? Ever since I was a kid, I’d heard the real power inherent in a lot of songs from musicals and this record gives me the chance to show it.”

Dee Does Broadway features Snider singing songs from musicals like CabaretChicago,West Side StorySouth PacificGuys And Dolls and many others. As if that wasn’t odd enough, though, the album also features guest appearances from the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Clay Aiken, Bebe Neuwirth, Patti LuPone, and many others. While we can’t blame Snider for doing something he’s always wanted to do, it’s still a little hard to imagine him in the studio recording rock versions of musical hits. Then again, we’ve gotten use to the idea of Twisted Sister recording Christmas songs.

The album comes out on May 8 via Razor & Tie, which coincides with the release of his autobiography Shut Up and Give Me The Mic. However, Snider’s rendition of the song “Cabaret” has been made available for stream and can be heard after the jump.

Last year, I went to the National Worship Leaders Conference in Kansas City. As a songwriter, I always take advantage of the songwriting critique panels they offer. They usually consist of artists and record company people who give their thoughts and opinions of your song. Last year, a guy named Richie Fike was on the panel & critiqued one of my songs. It's kind of a coincidence that now I sit here critiquing his songs. He gave me a great review, so hopefully I can return the favor here. 🙂
Fike is not just Richie Fike. It's Richie and Dana Fike, husband and wife, worship pastors at Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs, and Integrity Music new artist and writers. That's a mouth full.
One of the first things that grabbed me was Richie and Dana's vocals. Very smooth and distinct. They mesh very well and easy to listen to.
My favorite track is probably Glorious You Are. Just a beautiful song of worship that will work corporately.
For me there was also a standout lyric on this album that really struck me and stuck with me. It's the opening line on the song Wait:
"It never goes like I thought it should, and that's a real nice thing, because the Lord is good."
I just thought that was a really profound and beautiful way to express that message. Great writing!
The other standout songs for me were Jehovah (also great lyrically), Be Still, and the title track, The Moment We've Been Waiting For.
Not all the songs are corporate worship friendly, but there's a lot of heart and beauty in this album. I really enjoyed listening through it. Great job Fike and Integrity!

Teodasia is a symphonic metal band from Venice, Italy, that began in 2006. The band's composer and drummer Francesco Gozzo helped organize the group which includes Priscilla Fiazza on vocals; Fabio Compagno, on guitars; and Nicola Falsone, on bass. Teodasia's first full album, 'Upwards', will be released in late 2011.

This is a fantastic debut for a new band. Solid as if they have been playing and preparing this album for years. The orchestration that the band uses to fill the sound chamber allows this debut to take on epic and majestic proportions. Unique and full of surprises, with Fiazza's voice capturing your attention early and never letting it go. One of the better heavy metal, female progressive, releases this year.
