"I seem extroverted but I'm incredibly introverted," Tori Amos says in an articulate whisper. She's sitting in a light-filled Tribeca apartment explaining why, after a life spent performing, it was a thoroughly nerve-racking experience recording her new album, Gold Dust (due October 2nd). The album – Amos' second foray into classical music, following 2011’s Night of Hunters – reads like a scrapbook of her career, comprising old favorites reworked with orchestration from the Metropole Orchestra.

It wasn't revisiting her discography so much as the orchestra itself that intimidated Amos during the album's recording, which saw her tracking her vocals in front of the nearly 60-piece Dutch orchestra (whom Amos first performed live with in 2010) and personnel from her label (Deutsche Grammophon). "I sing about some of these very intimate moments in my life, and a lot of them written before I got married to Mark [Hawley, also her sound engineer], and he's there and everyone knows," she says. "It was walking into a room full of people and baring your most intimate thoughts to after barely saying hello."

"The Fallen Ones", the new single from the Karlstad, Sweden-based metal/rock band SPARZANZA, can be streamed in the YouTube clip below. The song comes off the group's sixth album, "Death Is Certain, Life Is Not", to be released on September 29 via Spinefarm Records. The CD was once again recorded at Leon Music with producer Rikard Löfgren, who helmed the band's previous three CDs and has also worked with such other artists as HELLFUELED, VOMITORY and DEATHSTARS.

SPARZANZA previously stated about the new record, "This time we have dug a little bit further in our minds, trying to create a really dark and heavy album, but still having focus on writing good melodies. We also added a lot more percussion parts, dark choirs and live strings. It sounds so good and we know that you will be blown away."

The Great Bear is my first experience with Denver, Colorado, metal band Silencer. Although over past 10 years, they've had some domestic and international success with their version of American thrash metal. The Great Bear is intended to be a concept album, one considering alternative history.

Revisiting the early space race between the United States and Russia, Silencer wonder what would have happened if Russia "chose to one-up the American's moon landing by going somewhere further." They tell the story from the perspective of the Russian nation and an individual member of the mission. Sounds promising, right? But how does it pan out?

First, while the album has 11 songs,The Great Bear is a short album, on 30 minutes long. But if you knock the one spoken piece, 1969, and the last piece, which sounds like the Russian national anthem, then you're down to nine songs and just better than 27 minutes. If it weren't for quantity of songs The Great Bear might have been considered an EP. Second, Silencer's music is more heavy metal and less thrash. It's more like meat and potatoes Eighties traditional metal, with a side of thrash thrown in. Alternatively, Silencer packs a lot into many of the songs, mostly a big bass line and massive amounts of riffage, with a guitar solo now and then. Of these tracks Great Bear, Star City, The Roar, and Orders/Sacrifice are the best picks.

NOW!NOT REAL WAR...

On the album the band went through "a living hell" - said the leader of the team, Adam Savage. "It took four years, five line-up changes, two studios, two labels, and countless hours of work and here it finally comes out!"

During recording, the tension between the parties came to a head, and in the end it was decided to leave the vocalist and drummer. In place of the latter was quickly found Dave Kazukiewicz, but with a singer ... "We have found the singer, but quickly stepped life circumstances and everything will have changed" - says Savage. "Then I asked my friend, Jessica'y Sierra come with us on a few shows."

Following the presentations, Jessica became a regular participant Mongrel, and the group returned to the studio to re-record all of the material from scratch.

dc539f2c4ce9e8c956407208796e100dNOW!

Their history dates back to 2001, but now Evershine has put together their full-length debut, Renewal, a platter of melodic power metal. Power metal? Italy? Could it be? Hold back your incredulity for just a moment. Evershine is pretty darn good.

Renewal is definitely epic, lively, and bombastic, like any Italian power metal band should be. Early in their career the band took cues from fellow Italian metallers Rhapsody of Fire, but also Stratovarius. How epic and over the top is that?

While somewhat typical of European power metal, Evershine works from three strengths. The first is the strong and versatile lead vocals from Marco Coppotelli and vocal arrangements. The second is the balance of guitar and synth solos. There's definitely some thrilling fret pyrotechnics, but the keyboards also do well. Third, Evershine concentrates on melody, and melody often with a rock groove. Yet, they can still be heavy and fast, as power metal should be.

NOW!

Italian power metal band Thy Majestie are back home with their long time label, Scarlet Records, for the release of their sixth album, ShiHuangDi. The band also returns to their historical concept album format. ShiHuangDi concerns the life of the legendary Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC.Thy Majestie: back from the Great Wall.

As for the music, nothing has changed for Thy Majestie: expect extravagant, melodic, and symphonic power metal. What has always set TM apart was the ability to balance all instruments in the arrangements, especially guitar and keyboard solos. After this, the also add some progressive metal nuances, without being over technical.

Now!

It seems Hollow Haze has decided on what they want to be. When reviewing 2008'sThe Hanged Man, I suggest that they need to decide if they want to be a strict heavier metal band or a more melodic metal band with some progressive nods. It seems with Poison in Black they've opted for the latter.

Actually, Hollow Haze is sounding more like a symphonic Cage, that is strong heavier metal with large amounts of orchestral synths. While not sounding like Sean Peck, Alex "Ramon" Sonato is largely relentless in his approach; his approach is pretty much head on scream-singing with little variation.
