Black Rose, a Swedish hard rocking heavy metalband has been putting out killer heavy metal tunes since 1990. The band, flying under the radar and fighting a few lineup changes but remaining stable, is releasing their latest album “Turn on the Night” in January 2013. The man credited for their record deal is none other than Christian Liljegren (Narnia, Divine Fire, Golden Resurrection…) so it must be expected to be epic and powerful music. Neo-Star Nova Z is the colorful moniker of multi-instrumentalist Brian Waymire, and he’s just released his latest CD entitled Omega Factor. Basically this is a five song EP, but Brian has added instrumental versions of some songs, plus a number of remixes and demos from an earlier release (Infinity Factor).

Waymire is a decent guitarist, laying down solid rhythm lines and catchy hooks. His soloing is very good, although at times he tries to do a bit too much and ends up overreaching just a little. He is a very good bassist with an effective sense of timing and mood, and his drum work supports both guitar and bass well. Lost Earth is an Auckland, New Zealand based project carried out by multi-instrumentalist André Birt (taking on vocal, guitar, bass and keyboard duties) and drummer Brent Martin. The pair have released their debut and self-titled album independently and citing the lack of a live scene for new bands in their homeland the band is a studio-only affair. Having said that; it does have a big sound with a bright production and the drums are very upfront in the mix. Although the band classifies its sound as melodic rock, I would say that it is sounds like very accessible prog rock with a bit of classic rock thrown in.
