Speaking about theatrical power metal, Gloryhammer has always stood at the top of the pack with a mix of insanely hooky songwriting, awesome vocals, and hilarious lyrics. Meanwhile, German metal band Orden Ogan is characterized by their mix of heavy riffs, huge choruses, and overall strong songwriting. Combining the two in a way seems like a good recipe.
Well, that’s exactly what’s happened here, as singer Thomas Winkler parted ways with his former band after the release of their third album, and has teamed up with Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann to continue his character’s saga, albeit in a new, slightly revised form, as he’s now called Angus McSix instead of Angus McFife, and now he wields a sword and fights evil in the past.
The debut album ”ANGUS McSIX and THE SWORD OF POWER” is fist-pumping symphonic commercial metal for the light-hearted, of the Victorius & Battle Beast ilk, so you should know exactly what you’re in for. ‘Fist-pumping’ is a term used here to describe a certain tempo. Not fast, not slow, not even mid-paced. Listen to the opening track (and first single) “Master Of The Universe” and you’ll see what I mean – as your fists clench and almost subconsciously start punching the air.
Angus McSix and the Sword of Power less power metal based than Winkler’s previous work with Gloryhammer, and less heavy or dark like Seeb’s Orden Ogan. There are still some up-tempo tracks, with a couple, in particular being quite fast and intense, but the majority of the album feels like modern melodic metal, with a big focus on keyboards and lots of rock&pop melodies.
In short; accessible, modern, anthemic stuff.
