Do you remember Swede female rock singer ERIKA? Her debut album ‘Cold Winter Night’ with the huge European hit ‘Together We’re Lost’ in 1990? She was Yngwie’s girlfriend, but a true artist in her own right. ERIKA never quit the music business and now the singer is releasing today “United States Of Erika“, her eighth solo LP.
Those who know Erika’s 90s music history know that there were several local hits and many collaborations with other artists, in parallel with songwriting for others. On the later albums, you get a rawer and harder Erika compared to the neat AOR that applied in her origins, but still with the same strong melodies.
“United States Of Erika” does that too, incorporating some current commercial power metal influences, although still with one foot left in the classic ’90s hard rock sound. Vocally, Erika remains strong, mature, powerful yet in control and melodic.
The new album is benefited by short and effective songs – 10 tracks at 34 minutes – and variation from glammy rockers and Metalite-like numbers to power ballads / midtempo melodious songs. It’s well produced and mixed, with a modern sonic output.
A fine new record, enjoyable easy listening.
