We have featured here the best sounding CD press of RICHARD MARX first two albums, and one of you asked for his third, “Rush Street“. This record never has been remastered, and doesn’t needs to as it sounds fantastic.
This rare Japanese pressed disc was distributed for promotional use only. It has the same packaging (even the OBI), but the sonic output is different than the regular release.
Indeed, this promo version of “Rush Street” sounds fabulous. Destined for radio broadcast, the Dinamic Range is better and the output punchy. We have paired this one with the regular release, and there’s a difference.
It truly feels like a late ’90s remastering job, those that fix the early CD era ‘flat transfer to digital’ but avoid the brickwall of many current remasters.
Of course, the brilliant production design of “Rush Street” helps a lot.
Yes, “Rush Street” is just another – and one the greatest – of those 1990-92 major label US productions, with a glossy, pristine and huge sound.
Musically, this is a superb rock&pop / melodic rock album, with excellent songwriting and a stellar cast of session musicians. We put ’em all in detail below because it truly deserve to be ckeck out.
All the best play here, from Randy Jackson, Terry Bozzio, Nathan East or Jeff Porcaro, to Michael Landau and Steve Lukather. Even Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee, who rarely did sessions for others, play drums on one track, and wonderfully.
One thing that always loved about this album is the ‘nerve’ on many of the songs.
While Marx’s band guitarist Bruce Gaitsch is melodic, inventive and technically perfect, the Steve Lukather performance on the rockers is all that plus THE TONE. How he does that? The man is out of this world.
Lukather was as well involved in the arrangements of the song he performs, and you can tell.
Take as example “Streets Of Pain”. Wow, the guitar work kills. Add to it Randy Jackson’s big bass and Tommy Lee’s kick @ss drumming. In many ways, the overall feel brings to mind Toto’s upcoming album ‘Kingdom Of Desire’. Huge.

And then you have the ballads / midtempo “Keep Coming Back”, “Hazard”, etc, the commercial rock&pop tunes but not your ordinary for sure, a step above from all this kind of stuff released at the time.
“Rush Street” is a complete album, with fantastic Rock&pop for the ‘good guys’, and rockers for the ‘bad guys’.
As said, this Japanese CD version is simply awesome, and as plus includes the exclusive bonus track “Ride With Idol” not present in later reissues of the album.
