Exclusive reviews and promo records

Archive for September, 2012

If you can get to something held at Rutherglen House just off Finders Lane, make sure you go. Last week this Melbourne venue-like-no-other played host to Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson launching Wreck and Ruin, the couple's newest collaborative CD which will be available in September (although can be purchased online at Sanity.com) Their follow up to 2008's Rattlin' BonesWreck and Ruin has every good thing about its platinum record breaking predecessor going for it. Between their natural and occasionally hilarious 'married banter' routine, the two performed a collection of world class songs penned during a retreat in a cabin on the Central coast. They opened opened with My Name is Adam, accompanying themselves on electric banjo (which they each made a point of learning for this CD ) and acoustic guitar.

The 13-track release features not only fresh takes on classics such as "Jingle Bells," "Winter Wonderland" and even "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer," but also original compositions that are destined to become future headbanging holiday favorites. The album also compiles remixed and remastered versions of the band's previous holiday hits, like "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Little Drummer Boy." Rounding out the collection is an updated version of the band's rendition of "Carol of the Bells," heard in Frank Miller's (300, Sin City) movie The Spirit and Seth MacFarlane's (Family Guy) American Dad.
“The idea of doing a full Christmas album has been floating around in the ABR camp for a few years now, but what always held us back was finding the time and energy to write an additional full-length in between touring and writing our regular records. After finishing Leveler I finally felt inspired enough to tackle the Christmas album idea.”

NOW!

Rheia does also orchestral compositions and programming in a professional way. If you're interested in these services please use the contact form.

Rheia is the creation of Swiss song-writing sound engineer and keyboardist Pascale Peng. Over the course of a couple of years she gradually recorded these songs with a cast of carefully chosen musicians. The band name she has chosen is taken from the Greek goddess Rheia (or Rhea), the daughter of the Earth, who gave birth to the Greek Pantheon of gods, including the rulers of Heaven and Hell, Zeus and Hades. However, this is not an concept album, and the lyrics are about a wide variety of topics. The closest I can get to describing her totally unique but hugely appealing music is try imagining a touch of Within Temptation symphonic metal being propelled along by The Cars' driving rhythms, then add OMD's synths and pop sensibilities, and finally top with Nena on vocals to

Helsinki, Finland-based gothic metallers THE 69 EYES are putting the finishing touches on their 10th studio album, "X", in Stockholm, Sweden for a late September release through RCA/Sony Music in Finland andNuclear Blast in the rest of Europe and North America. A single, "Red", will precede the full-length CD in August.
Commented THE 69 EYES lead singer Jyrki69: "The cover is pure goth 'n' roll: a psychedelic mirror image of old wild animal bones with our X-tagram projected over all. It's good, evil, magic and voodoo all together! Something to stare at when tripping on the album."

"X" was mixed by Stefan Boman (THE HELLACOPTERS, BULLET). "The sound is the most melodic, yet melancholic, we've ever had," saysJyrki69. "Listening to the pre-mixes have been giving goose bumps to everyone here. This is the best THE 69 EYES album ever done!"

Though organized in the early Eighties, California's Axehammer has had a spotty recording history. There first full-length album, Windrider, only arrived in 2005. Seven years later, they deliver Marching On, perhaps a title that reflects their perseverance.

Axehammer delivers basically no frills, straight up, American heavy and power metal. They've got a new lead singer in Kleber Mandrake, who sounds like a stranger mixture of Geddy Lee and young Halford. He can sing, scream, and hit those high notes with ease. However, sometimes his sustained higher notes can sound like a vibrato warble.
