Hailing from the North of Ireland Filthy Angels sound like they've been brought up on a heavy diet of heads down rock 'n' roll, drawing their influences from a plethora of '80s rockers. There is definitely a hint of The Wildhearts ('Destroy' era), some no nonsense hard rocking Almighty style here and there, as well as a smidgen of The Dogs D'amour to name but three influences heard on this here pledged album.
They've clearly listened to some decent bands and learnt from them as well as 'Can't Go Home' will testify, with it's infectious chorus and wah-laden lead break. 'Anti Social Emotion' is a halfway decent acoustic strummin' Warwick meets Malin toe tapper. It might not set the world on fire but there is more than a spark here, and I can see Filthy Angels picking up quite a few fans who are looking for a new band to dig, an band who share the same influences and manage to nail them onto an album that tells the listener that the band are having the best of times living the dream and doing something they love.
'Can't Get Through' is more heads down and balls to the wall rock 'n' riff whilst in contrast 'Couldn't Love Me' is an anthem with a decent hook and melody and is bright and breezy happy go lucky rock 'n' roll. 'Just Might Make It' has shades of sounding like it could be an American radio hit, you know the type of song you would definitely hear if someone like the Goo Goo Dolls were to rock it up a notch or two (or three) all across North America on daytime rock FM.
Before we're out of here we get the no holds barred boogie riff-a-rama of 'Roll All Over You', then it's left to 'Getting It Right' to round it all off. For a self financed album via Pledge these ten songs show that Filthy Angels have the right work ethic and are making definite strides in the right direction to making a decent fist of this rock 'n' roll malarkey, and they can only look up as they get into writing music and honing those solid roots they clearly have and just keep getting better and better.
As has been said many many times about new bands there is potential here and Filthy Angels are striding in the right direction. It's not about reinventing the wheel it's about writing good rock 'n' roll songs and playing the shit out of them for fans who want a good time. From the evidence of 'Like A Filthy Angel' these boys know what they want and how to go about getting it.
